With the snows melting the attention now turns to the rivers and creeks in the area and the possibility of flooding.  The National Weather Service river forecast for the next 48 hours has projected minor flooding in the Philippi area with waters in the Parsons and Dailey areas to reach near flood stage.  One county is keeping their eyes on the flood conditions.  Spokesman for the Tucker County Office of Emergency Management Chris Stadelman.  “We will be watching the levels and we want to warn those that live near streams and rivers.”  Flood warnings have been posted for Barbour, Pocahontas, Randolph, Upshur and Webster Counties with flood watches set for Tucker and Pendleton.

 

The Upshur County Commission approved the application for a $1.5 million small cities block grant to provide water to parts of Southern Upshur County.  According to Region 7 Executive director Rosemary Wagner, the areas affected would be Indian Camp and Kanawha Head in Upshur County and Cleveland in Webster County.  Wagner went on to say that should the grant be approved, the $1.5 million would go towards the total cost of the project which is $5.5 million dollars. Wagner stated that they would be notified on the application for the grant in July.

Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputies are in need of your help in finding the man responsible for the robbery of the Fastbreak Convenience Store in Beverly Tuesday Night.  Randolph County Chief Deputy Mark Brady asks that “Any customer that was at the store at the time of the robbery please contact the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department of the 9-1-1 center.” The incident took place around 9 pm.  The man is described as 5’ 10” to 6’ 2” wearing a black hoody, blue jeans, black shoes and a goatee.  Following the robbery, the man left the store heading North.  Sheriff’s Deputies are currently studying video of the robbery.

 

Six defendants were sentenced in U. S. District Court in Elkins Tuesday and Wednesday.  40-year-old Richard Hayhurst to a term of 20 months for possession of firearms.  49-year-old Daniel A. Corica of Elkins to five years probation for possession of marijuana with in intent to deliver and a fine of $500. 50-year-old  Billy Joe Radcliff to five years probation on one count of distribution of hydrocodone.  24-year-old Zachary Stokes of Buckhannon to five years probation for the possession of pseudooephrine for the manufacturing of methamphetamine.  32-year-old Jabbar Q. Kimble of Philadelphia, PA to six months in jail for possession with intent to deliver marijuana in Pendleton County.  51-year-old Brenda Sue White to two years in prison for conspiracy to distribute cocaine in Randolph County.

 

It didn’t take long for Alumni and friends of Davis and Elkins College to get started on meeting the challenge of $300,000 set by Philanthropist Doris Buffett.  More then $40,000 has already been committed to the college to try and meet the goal set by Buffett. The goal of $600,000 will go to the Highland Scholarship program which will enable 45 high school seniors from Randolph and the surrounding counties to attend D&E.  Davis and Elkins has till August 30 of this year to reach its goal.

60-year-old John Boggs of Marlinton was arrested by the Pocahontas Sheriff’s Department and charged with the first degree murder of his brother 51-year-old Danny Boggs.  The shooting took place Tuesday afternoon on the Brownsburg Road.  Sheriff’s Deputies discovered Boggs at a cabin dead from a shotgun blast to the chest.  John Boggs is currently housed in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.  The Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

 

Upshur County Prosecuting attorney Jacob Reger has been named a special prosecutor in the case against a Randolph County employee.  26-year-old Elizabeth A. Doerr, an employee of the Randolph County clerk’s office, was taken into custody Friday by Sheriff’s Deputies and charged with two counts of the forgery of public records.  Randolph County prosecuting attorney Rich Busch

recused himself from the case. A preliminary hearing date has not been set.

 

Three Buckhannon residents were sentenced in U. S.  District Court Monday by Chief Judge John Preston Bailey.  34-year-old Jeremy T. Brown, 29-year-old Bruce A. Davidson, Jr. and 21-year-old Wesley Mayes were all sentenced for conspiracy to distribute and to manufacture methamphetamine from the fall of 2007 to July of 2009.  Brown was sentenced to 30 years in prison, while Davidson was sentenced to 19 years and Mayes to 2 and half years in prison. 

 

West Virginia Representative Shelley Moore-Capito announced that the Huttonsville Public Service District will receive $90,900 in federal funds to make emergency repairs following a massive waterline rupture.  The funding is through the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development.  The federal grant will be used to repair a 760 foot waterline pipe and any other necessary accessories. 

 

The U. S. Navy held a gathering in Elkins to pay tribute to those who assisted in the rescue and recovery of the downed Blackhawk helicopter in the northern part of Pocahontas County, February 18th during a snowstorm.  Captain Steve Schreiber, commander of the Helicopter Sea Combat Wing of the Atlantic in Norfolk, showed his appreciation.  A salute went out to the Shavers Fork Fire and Rescue and the Bartow-Frank-Durbin Fire Companies.  The WV National Guard, to the members of Snowshoe Mountain for the use of the snow Cats plows and the snow mobiles, to Davis Memorial Hospital and to the Greenbrier Regional and Randolph-Elkins Airports.  Schreiber let them know that of the 17 crew, 2 are still recovering and doing well.   Schreiber said that after seeing the response of those involved, he has adopted West Virginia as a member of the family.  He went onto say, don’t be surprised if this is made into a movie.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call over the weekend in the Walkersville area of an accidental shooting.  Josh Davisson of Walkersville was shot in the abdomen and was life-flighted to Ruby Memorial Hospital. It is believed the person responsible for the shooting is Devon McCartney.  The shooting is still under investigation.

 

The Elkins woman injured in a Saturday morning accident has been identified.  20-year-old Kassi Koontz was traveling east on Route 33 when she lost control of her car near the Childers Run Road. The car rolled ejecting Koontz.  She was then air lifted to Ruby Memorial Hospital where she is listed in fair condition.  The investigation was handled by the Buckhannon City Police.

 

West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin recently extended the emergency status of three counties which had been declared on February 5th, Preston, Randolph and Tucker.   According to the Governor’s press release, these counties are still dealing with the aftermath of the winter storms.  The West Virginia National Guard will still be responding to emergency conditions that might be caused due to the winter storms through March 24th. Emergency status has been lifted for the rest of the counties in the state.

 

Applications are now available from the West Virginia Sheriff’s Association’s 2010 Scholarship Program.  Scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each will be awarded to applicants pursuing a degree in criminal justice at West Virginia Colleges and Universities.  Copies of the eligibility rules and application forms are available at your local Sheriff’s Office or you can contact the WV Sheriff’s Association at 304-345-2232.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest concerning the missing money from the County Clerk’s Office.  Taken into custody was 26-year-old Elizabeth Ann Doerr of Beverly.  Doerr was charged with two counts of the forgery of public records.  She has since posted bond.  In late December, Randolph County Clerk Brenda Wiseman reported some missing funds to the County Commission.       

 

After the many thanks from the Elkins community to Philanthropist Doris Buffett for her recent help on the Middle School, Ms. Buffett said, “I’m not through with Elkins yet.”  In a message to Davis and Elkins College President W. T. “Buck” Smith last week, the sister to Warren Buffett offered to underwrite $300,000 in scholarships to seniors in Randolph and surrounding counties attending D & E.  College.  President “Buck” Smith:    (clip)    Ms. Buffett went on to say She was very much caught up in Davis and Elkins‘ vision for West Virginia’s younger generation through the Highland Scholarship Program and wants to do her part to help.  The buffett gift will match the gifts of others dollar for dollar up to $300,000.  The deadline is August 30 with opening day of classes for D&E’s 2010 - 2011 academic year.

 

An abandoned house caught fire Saturday night  on the Valley Fork Road in the southern part of Randolph County.  Members of the Valley Head and Huttonsville / Mill Creek fire companies were called out around 10:30.  The blaze was contained within an hour and half.  The cause of the fire has not been determined and is under the investigation of the Valley Head Fire Company.

A Philippi man was arrested Friday and charged with malicious assault.  Philippi Police took 37-year-old Thomas Watson into custody Friday night for the beating of another man.  The incident took place on South Main Street in the downtown district in early February of this year.  Watson is currently housed in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $5,000 bond.

 

An Elkins woman was air-lifted to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown following a Saturday morning accident.  The 20-year-old woman, whose name was not available at the time of this report, was traveling east on Route 33 near Buckhannon when she lost control of her car rolling it several times ejecting her form the vehicle.  Her injuries are listed as serious.  The Buckhannon City Police is handling the investigation. 

 

Police recently charged an Elkins man with grand larceny.  24-year-old Stephen Diffenderfer had stolen a woman’s car, cell phone and debit card in Mid December.  The woman’s car was later found in Ohio.  He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail. 

 

A Bruceton Mills woman died early Thursday following a collision with a Department of Highways road grader.  33-year-old Jacelyn Cottrell was traveling south on Route 26 near the Coal Lick Road when the accident took place.  She was pronounced dead on the scene.  The driver of the grader was not injured.

Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested A Buckhannon man for joyriding Friday afternoon.  30-year-old Thomas Allen Haddix, Jr. was found in possession of a 2007 Pontiac G-6, belonging to Leslie D. Hinzman who had reported it stolen

in Randolph County.  Haddix is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.

 

Fire broke out in the Tunnelton area early Thursday morning.  According to the Tunnelton fire Department a home located on Berry Street caught fire around 3 am.  By the time fire crews arrived the house was fully engulfed.  Firemen had trouble finding fire hydrants due to the deep snow.  All inside escaped without injury.  The house was deemed a total loss.  Cause of the fire is believed to be a wood stove. 

 

One was injured following a two car accident at the corner of 3rd Street and Center Avenue in downtown Weston.  One of those involved had to be extricated

from the vehicle and taken to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital where their condition is unknown.  The accident is being investigated by the Weston City Police.

 

A new coordinator has been hired for Durbin days but not without some controversy.  Durbin Mayor, Donald Peck was hired to head up Durbin Days Heritage Festival on Monday by members of the town council.   Some expressed that their might be a conflict of interest.  A recommendation was made that a letter be sent to the Ethics Commission as to whether the hiring of Peck would conflict with his duties as Mayor.  Peck would be paid $500 for the position as festival coordinator. 

 

The Belington City Council met Thursday evening and one of the first topics discussed was to expand the commercial portion of the city to include Belington Medical Clinic.  Following the second reading, the council voted 5 to 1 to approve the changes made in the zoning to allow the clinic inside of the city limits.  This move will allow the Belington Medical Clinic to expand it’s facilities.

The Buckhannon City Police are on the lookout for yet another missing person.  Reports are that 42-year-old John Corley of North Kanawha Street had an argument with his Wife on Tuesday and had left his home, he has not been seen since.  According to Police he is driving a silver Dodge neon.  The license plate number is 6-P-M-9-1-6.  Police say he may be carrying a 9mm handgun.  If you have any information please call the Buckhannon City Police at 304-472-5723.

 

Fire broke out at a home in Job early Thursday morning.  The Harman Fire Company was called to the home of Mike Mullenex around 4:45am.  The fire was brought under control within 15 to 20 minutes.  The cause is believed to be an electrical problem in the furnace.  Whitmer Volunteer Fire assisted in the call.

 

The March term of the Preston County Grand Jury came back with the indictment of 21-year-old Eric Hudson of Reedsville for the robbery of the BB&T Bank in Reedsville in August of 2009.  Also indicted was 23-year-old Charles Lamar, Jr. of Masontown on two counts of first degree sexual assault and two counts of sexual abuse by a guardian of an 11-year-old girl.  A total of 29 indictments were returned.

 

St. JosephWest VirginiaUniversity’s Department of Emergency Medicine are joining forces.  WVU doctors will be assisting St. Joseph’s by staffing its PromptCare walk-in Clinic and the emergency room.  The hospital has contracted the doctors for a seven month period.’s Hospital and

The March Term of the Lewis County Grand Jury met on Monday and came back with a total of 26 indictments, five of which were sealed.  Of those to be indicted were Elvis E. King, Jr. on three counts of wanton endangerment with a firearm, and one count of second degree murder.  Also indicted was Terry M. Garton on three counts of wanton endangerment with a firearm.  David Bruce Epp was also indicted on 4 counts of the delivery of a controlled substance and four counts of conspiracy.

 

Route 32 has been closed since Monday afternoon due to the collapse of what is known as the old Milkint Garage building.  Officials had been holding off on the clean-up till building inspectors could evaluate the situation.   Thomas officials now say that the removal of the rubble will take place starting Wednesday afternoon.  Local traffic is still asked to use US 219 or Brown street in Thomas.

 

Three people were injured following a two car collision.  According to the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department the accident took place Tuesday in the community of Simpson.  A vehicle traveling east on Route 13 hit another that had been traveling west.  All three were taken to UnitedHospitalCenter in Clarksburg and treated for injuries.  Their conditions are currently unknown.  The Taylor County Sheriff’s Department along with the State Police is handling the investigation. 

 

A convicted sex offender was arrested by Ohio Patrol Officers Saturday afternoon for the kidnapping of a Preston County Teenager.  39-year-old Matthew Mabee a convicted sex offender from Indiana is charged with kidnapping, with more charges pending.  Mabee had met the teen on the internet.  The Preston County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

 

The mid-December snow that hit the area caused local, county and state governments to exhaust a lot of funds to keep roadways open.  Help is on the way.  President Obama declared 15 counties within the state disaster areas

from the mid-December storm.  Area counties to be included were Pocahontas and Pendleton.

West Virginia Route 32 remains closed due to the collapse of a garage in the Thomas area.  Known as the old Milkint building, authorities say the building collapsed sometime around 2:30pmBrown StreetOakland is open..  US 219 to Monday afternoon.  The recent heavy snows are believed to be the cause of the building’s demise.  The clean-up of the area has been put on hold pending the arrival of building inspectors. 56-year-old William J. Hood, Sr. of Weston was arrested by State Police and charged with a sexual assault which took place one year ago.  According to authorities, he had inappropriately   touched a woman while she was having a seizure.  This had not been the first time this had taken place.  Hood was taken into custody and charged with second degree sexual assault.  He is currently being held on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond at the Central Regional Jail. 

 

Monday night’s Weston City Council meeting saw the approval of a sign-on bonus to assist in growing the local police department.  Weston City Police is down to four officers and has been losing some to other local towns that have been offering similar bonuses to attract qualified candidates for the position. The decree states that certified men and women will now receive $7,500 extra just for signing a contract.  Testing gets under way in three weeks.

 

After a two day search, the Buckhannon Fire Department discovered the body of 23-year-old Joey Rosencrance.  He was found in the Buckhannon River 40 yards from where he was dropped off Sunday afternoon to go fishing.  His body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The Buckhannon City Police is searching for a man who has been missing since Sunday afternoon.  23-year-old Joseph Rosencrance of Cleveland Avenue2 pmIsland Avenue to go fishing.  Police discovered footprints which lead into the water and down the river they reappear out of the water.  The police are being assisted by the Buckhannon Fire Department and members of Rosencrance’ Church.  He is wearing a brown beanie type ball cap, brown sweat and combination overall, hip waders and a goatee. If you have any information please contact the Buckhannon City Police at 304-472-5723. just off was dropped off around

 

Fire crews in TaylorCounty were kept busy Saturday morning.  Dyna-Mix, a rubber mixing company located just outside of Grafton caught fire Saturday morning.  The blaze was extinguished within 30 minutes.  The cause has not been determined.  The State Fire Marshall’s Office along with Grafton Fire is handling the investigation. 

 

Thursday’s Upshur County Commission meeting saw the commission accept the resignation of Deputy Circuit Clerk Patty J. Bennett.  Bennett submitted her letter to the commission on Monday, February 22.  Bennett’s letter stated that she is retiring and want to spend more time with her family.  Her resignation takes effect Thursday, March 4th.  The commission then went on to approve the advertising of the circuit clerk’s position and would be taking applications.
