Fire broke out at a two story structure in Elkins early Friday morning.  Fire crews from Elkins, Leading Creek and Beverly were called to 506 Center Street around 2:45am.  By the time crews arrived the house was fully engulfed.  The blaze was brought under control within an hour.  The structure was deemed a total loss.  The house was unoccupied at the time.  There were no injuries.  Cause has not been determined and is under the investigation of the State Fire Marshall’s Office.

 

At Thursday night’s Buckhannon City Council it was determined which Convention and Visitors Bureau was to receive 50% of the hotel / motel tax collected by the county.  The two the council had to select from were the Buckhannon CVB or the Upshur CVB.  City Council voted to give the funds to the Upshur CVB.  Buckhannon City Attorney, Dave McCauley will be preparing an ordinance giving the Upshur CVB funding, which will be presented at the next Buckhannon City Council meeting.

 

Buckhannon City Police responded to a break-in at the Old Mill Restaurant Friday morning around 2 am.  According to Police Chief Matt Gregory close to $12,000 was stolen.  Police are looking for tips.  Should you have any information please contact the Buckhannon City Police tip line at 473 – 1001.

 

Preston County Sheriff’s Deputies were called out to an Arthurdale home Thursday afternoon after reports of shots being fired.  25-year-old Jared William Rivera of the Pell Road, was taken into custody and charged with one count of wanton endangerment with a firearm.  Anyone with information should contact the Preston County Sheriff’s Department at 329 – 1611.

Preston County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an accident between a school bus and car near the high School.  Linda Weaver of Tunnelton was traveling west on Knight Drive and a school bus driven by Calvin Montgomery of Masontown was traveling east and attempted to make a left turn and struck Weaver’s vehicle.  The bus was not occupied at the time and no one was injured.  The Preston County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

 

The Tucker County Commission and Cortland Acres have come to the rescue of a local clinic.  According to the Parsons Advocate, the commission contributed $40,000 to the cost of the construction of the Mountain Top Clinic.  The Money will go towards site preparation, engineering costs and crane rental and utilities installation.  Cortland Acres Board President Pat Nichols says that there will be no lapse in service if they can help it.

 

Three more victims have stepped forward claiming they had been sexually assaulted by a Barboursville man.  80-year-old Foster “Pete” Bowen was charged with two counts of sexual assault and the display of obscene material to a minor.  Bowen allegedly took young boys to a camp and had been doing this since the 80s.  Two victims who came forward are from Webster County and another from Mason County.  More charges could be pending. Bowen is currently being held in the Western Regional Jail on a $1,000,000 bond.

A Randolph County man was life-flighted after being hit by a car Tuesday afternoon.  21-year-old Bethany Shipley was turning onto the Ward Road off of Route 219 and hit 77-year-old Franklin McCauley who was crossing the road at the time.  McCauley was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown.  The West Virginia State Police is handling the investigation.

 

26-year-old Leonard Wotring pled guilty to second degree murder in the death of Timothy Daft which took place in 2005.  Both were inmates in the Preston County Jail when Daft was later found hanging in the cell.  Later, Wotring had confessed to prison officials at the Mount Olive Prison that he had murdered Daft.  Wotring will be sentenced on October 14th.  He is currently being held at the Mount Olive facility.

 

State Police are looking for the person of persons who broke into a used car lot building early Monday morning.  According to authorities, C and J’s Used Auto in Valley Head was broken into by way of a window.  Close to $7,000 was taken as well as a computer.  A reward is being given for information that would lead to the arrest.  Call 339-2869 or 940-1972.

 

In a recent fireman’s competition the Buckhannon Fire Department made it to the next level.  After competing at the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge recently, the fire fighters of Buckhannon scored high and have qualified to reach the next level.  The challenge requires everything from pulling ropes to climbing stairs to running with a hose.  Buckhannon fire’s next stop along the way will be Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in November.

State Police have seized a large numbre marijuana plants and made several arrests over the last two weeks.  27-year-old Crystal Baker was charged by police with the manufacturing and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver as marijuana plants were discovered at her residence near Beaver Creek.  State Police arrested 50-year-old Timothy Parks McGuinn for the same offense as 39 marijuana plants were discovered at his Slaty Fork Property.  State police went on to say that they had found 87 plants near the Pocahontas / Greenbrier County line that had been planted in the National Forest area.  The street value was listed at close to $218,000.  State Police credit the use of their helicopter which helps locate most of the plants that had been confiscated. 

 

Cell Phone service will be much stronger in the Tucker County area, especially Thomas, thanks to a new tower.  Recently, the Tucker County Historic Landmarks commission and U.S. Cellular signed an agreement for the location of a new tower.  According to the Parsons Advocate, the tower will be located on the Western Pocahontas property along Route 219 near Cortland Acres.  The agreement was for $15,000.  The money will go toward several projects the town of Thomas is looking to take on.

 

Preston County Sheriff’s Department investigated a single car accident early Saturday Morning.  36-year-old Isaac Felton of Kingwood was traveling north on the Pleasant dale Road when he was forced off by another vehicle.  No contact was made by the other vehicle.  Felton was taken to Preston Memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown.  No citations were issued.

Fire broke out at a home around 2 am Monday morning.  Called to the scene were members of the Junior, Belington and Coalton fire companies.  The blaze was brought under control within an hour.  The house was deemed a total loss.  Cause has not been determined, the fire is under the investigation of the State Fire Marshall’s Office. 

 

A French Creek man is dead following a single vehicle accident Saturday night around 11:30pm.  According to State Police 53-year-old Timothy Springer was traveling the Alexander Road when his car left the roadway traveling over an embankment.  Indications are that the cause of the accident may have been due to a medical condition. 

 

One man is dead and another injured due to a single vehicle accident Friday evening.  The accident took place Friday around 5:30pm.  32-year-old Rodney Marteny of French Creek was traveling down the Skin Creek Road near the Stonewall Jackson lake when he lost control of his SUV.  Both he and his 54-year-old father Randy Marteny were ejected from the vehicle.  Randy Marteny was pronounced dead on the scene.  Rodney was flown by Health Net to Ruby Memorial Hospital where he is reported in fair condition.  The State Police are handling the investigation. 

 

A Bruceton Mills woman entered a plea of guilty to sexual abuse of a ward.  39- year-old Lori Sue Helmick a nurse at the Hazelton facility,  plead to one count of having sexual relations with an inmate who was in official detention and under the custodial authority as her patient.  Helmick could face up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

An 18-year-old man was hit by a car on Route 73 near the Boothsville Apartments Thursday night.  According to Authorities, the man was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown at this time.  The name of the individual was not available.  The Taylor County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

 

The Randolph County Commission’s Thursday afternoon meeting, after the second reading, saw the passing of the new Flood Plain Ordinance. The Flood plain ordinance had not been updated since 1991.  Residents from around the county had expressed their concerns at a meeting sponsored by the commission earlier this month, stating it was a form of zoning.  The commission made some clarifications on the ordinance at the meeting but, made no big changes to it.  The commission went on to say that if any part of it isn’t working, alterations would be made.  The Flood Plain Ordinance still needs approval from Charleston as well as FEMA.

 

Two Lewis County residents were sentenced before a Federal Court recently 34- year-old Eric Harris of Weston was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment followed by five years supervised release for the possession with intent to deliver crack cocaine in May of 2007.  Also sentenced was 23-year-old Joshua Butcher of Camden to two years with three years supervised release for one count of unlawfully, possessing, concealing, selling and disposing of two stolen firearms In July of 2008. 

 

A Buckhannon man was also indicted in Federal Court on drug charges.  26-year-old Jesse E. Howes was indicted for conspiring to manufacture and use Methamphetamine.  He was also indicted for possession of marijuana.  Howes could face up to 10 years imprisonment.

 

The high school football season is in full swing tonight.  Area games to watch; Philip-Barbour entertains Grafton; Elkins hosts East Fairmont; Buckhannon-Upshur travels to Bridgeport; Tygart Valley heads to Pendleton; Tucker County travels to Pocahontas County and Lewis County will face Clarksburg-Liberty.

Former Preston County Tax Deputy has been accused of embezzling.  A recent audit showed approximately $74,000 missing from the sheriff’s department.  Valerie Beeghly of Bruceton Mills is facing charges of falsifying records and embezzlement.  Beeghly was dismissed in February of this year.  If convicted, Beeghly could face up to 10 years on each of the charges.

 

Urban Deer Hunting in Buckhannon?  It could happen.  Several complaints have come to the attention of City Hall of the deer in and around the area and the damage they have done.  City Council is looking into the possibility of an Urban Deer Hunt in Buckhannon for the chance to harvest two additional deer each year.  Mayor Kenny Davidson has invited a member of the Division of Natural Resources to speak at the next city council meeting on September 2nd. 

 

High School Football in the State of West Virginia officially kicks off tonight !  Wheeling Island Stadium will be the site of two games this evening.  Wheeling Central will entertain Bellaire, Ohio and Wheeling Park will face off against Morgantown.  Other games tonight have Woodrow Wilson traveling to George Washington and Riverside will host Capital.

An investigation by the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department has lead to the discovery of several stolen items including ATVs.  Several break-ins occurred including one at a home in the Lee Glass Road area which led to the findings.  Arrests have been made and more arrests will follow.  Law enforcement would not release the names of those arrested as the investigation is still ongoing.  The State Police have been assisting in the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department.

 

Buckhannon City Police are investigating a two car accident which took place Tuesday at the intersection of the Route 33 off ramp and Route 20.  One vehicle was traveling north on Route 20 when is collided with the other coming off Route 33.  Both drivers were taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where their conditions are unknown at this time.  No citations have been given at this time.

 

Registration is underway for the Fall Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Workshop to be held at Watoga State Park in Pocahontas County.  It will be held September 17 through the 19 and is sponsored by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.  Some of the courses offered for women will include shooting, fishing, camping, fly tying and outdoor cooking.  Registration is now open for women 18 and older.  $150 covers lodging, some meals and class materials.  For more information women can call 304-558-2771.

Two juveniles who escaped from a facility in Pennsylvania are the ones seen in the Chenoweth Creek / Kelly Mountain area near Elkins Sunday night.  According to State Police, the two juveniles have stolen seven vehicles while on the run.  One out of the Adams Township facility, three in the Buckhannon area, two from the Elkins area and recently one from Grantsville, Maryland.  Police believe they have ties to either the Buckhannon or Elkins area and may be back.  Authorities recommend you keep your vehicles locked and in a lit area.  If you have any information please contact the State Police at 637 – 0200.

 

Pocahontas Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 27-year-old Crystal Dawn Baker of Marlinton on the charge of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.  Here bond set at $10,000.  Also arrested was 28-year-old Jeremiah Powell for third degree domestic battery.  He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail with a $15,000 bond.

 

The new Principal of Tucker County High, Jay Hamric wasted no time in establishing himself as the man in charge.  One of his first acts as principal was to require students to have their cell phones turned off at all times.  Hamric went on to say that this is not meant to penalize but he wants all to know that this is how it will be along with a few other changes. 

 

The Randolph County Commission will be holding a meeting Thursday afternoon at the Courthouse annex.  One of the items on the agenda will be the second reading of the Flood Plain Ordinance.  The meeting is set for 1:30pm.

Preston County Sheriff’s Deputies were called out to a single vehicle accident early Sunday morning.  36-year-old Brian Murray of Newburg was traveling down Route 50 west of Cool Springs when his pick-up truck left the roadway, crossed an embankment and struck a tree.  Murray along with his passenger 34-year-old Robert Stull of Kingwood were taken to Preston Memorial Hospital where their conditions are unknown. The Rowlesburg Fire Company assisted on the scene.

 

The Leading Creek Fire Department was called out to a fuel oil spill near Kerens Sunday afternoon.  The location was at a residence on the Clifton Run Road.  Indications were that heating oil was leaking from a tank located on the premise.  The amount is not known at this time.  The Department of Environmental Protection is handling the investigation.

 

A Weston Resident was sentenced in Federal Court on a firearms charge.  21- year-old Lindsey Harmon received 21 months imprisonment followed by three of supervised release.  Harmon was charged with one count of knowingly and willingly making materially false and fraudulent statements in October of 2008, about possession, concealment, sale and disposal of stolen firearms by another individual.

 

State Police were called out to the Chenoweth Creek / Kelly Mountain area of Randolph County Sunday evening.  Reports were that two individuals were shooting and possibly poaching of deer in the area. Upon investigation State Police recovered a car that had been stolen from the Buckhannon area over the weekend.  The suspects have not been apprehended at this time.

A juvenile was injured as the result of an ATV accident Thursday night.  The accident took place around 9:45pm on the Macedonia Road.  The juvenile was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital where his condition is currently unknown.  The Buckhannon Detachment of the West Virginia State Police is investigating.

 

One person was injured in a two car accident on I-79 near mile marker 95 on Thursday Night.  Jason Bulman of Ohio was driving a pick-up truck when he lost control rounding a curve striking the vehicle he was passing.  The truck then left the right side of the road striking a guardrail and traveling over an embankment.  Bulman was life-flighted to Ruby Memorial Hospital and listed in critical condition.  The driver of the other vehicle did not sustain any injuries.  The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation. 

 

A mobile home fire broke out Thursday morning in Flemington just off Route 76.  When fire crews arrived they found the back half of the mobile home on fire.  All those in the home got out safely.  Estimated damage has not been determined and cause is not known at this time.  Responding to the fire were members of the Flemington, Philippi and Anmore Fire companies.

 

The Buckhannon City Police will be holding a DUI sobriety checkpoint tonight starting a 9pm on Route 20.  Alternative routes to the checkpoint include Morton Avenue / Hall Road, Route 33, Main Street and Senior Drive.  The West Virginia State Police will be holding a sobriety checkpoint in Barbour County near the City limits of Philippi tomorrow, Saturday starting a 7pm.

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a single car accident that took place Wednesday night.  According to authorities the driver of a car was traveling south on Route 119 when another driver traveling north attempted to pass a car.  The south bound car then swerved, striking a guardrail.  The driver was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown.  The passenger in the car was taken to Grafton City Hospital

 

Organizations from around the Elkins area received funding for area projects.  Just over $48,000 was received by the Riverside School Association.  Coordinator Alice Sabatino says “We have been working with Historic Beverly, the Kump Home and C-HOPE to help preserve the history of the Elkins area,  the Money will go towards windows for the Riverside School.”  The Kump home received $35,176 to repair bricks and masonry while C-Hope received $64,000 for gutters, downspouts and chimney repair

 

A Weston woman was sentenced on fraud charges.  41-year-old Jennifer Mills was sentenced to 3 years in prison with 3 years supervised release.  Mills was charged with one count of wire fraud in furtherance of a scheme to use the phone and fax for interstate commerce.

Close to 100 people filled the Randolph County Courtroom Tuesday evening to share their opinions on the Flood Plain ordinance which the Randolph County is considering. Some expressed to the commission that it was another form of zoning and that they felt that the county would have too much of a say on what they built on their own land as well as the cost.  Others expressed the importance of the Flood Plain ordinance pointing to past floods in the immediate area and how it would better assist the county in such a time.  The county will need to pass some sort of ordinance by September 29th or they could lose any assistance from the National Flood Insurance Program.  A final vote by the Randolph County Commission is expected on August 26th.

 

Members of the Preston County Sheriff’s Department responded to a robbery last Thursday at the W.W. Service Center in Tunnelton.  Upon investigation it was discovered that two white males had robbed the store just after closing.  One is described as 5’9”, stocky, wearing a dark colored ski mask.  The other also around 5’9”, with a smaller build wearing a similar ski mask.  Both left on foot carrying a colored bag with money from the store.  No amount was given. The cause of death of a Webster County man may have been self defense.  Webster County Sheriff’s Deputies found the body of 60-year-old Gary Jackson in his cabin early Sunday morning along the Williams River Road.  A 21-year-old man told authorities that he had been assaulted by Jackson and was defending himself at the time.  No charges have been leveled against the man as evidence seems to support his claim of self defense.  Jackson’s Body has been sent to the state medical examiner’s Office.

A small diesel spill held up traffic Monday afternoon in Elkins.  The incident took place at Wamsley’s Service Center on Harrison Avenue.  A Guttman Oil tanker truck spilled diesel fuel while filling the tanks at the service station.  According to Elkins Fire Chief Tom Meader, the amount of the spill has not been determined.  Indications were that no fuel got into the water system. The Department of Environmental Protection is handling the investigation.

 

A Taylor County man was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court for drugging and sexually abusing four under-aged girls and taking them across state lines.  Judge Irene Keeley sentenced 50-year-old Bradley Barrett to 34 years in prison for the transporting of a minor with intentions of sexual activity.  Barrett is already serving 4 to 20 year sentence for the sexual abuse of four girls under the age of 12. 

 

State Police are investigating a possible murder after a man was found dead.  The unidentified man was discovered in a cabin along the Williams River Road. near Cowen. How the man died or other details were not available. The name of the man was not released pending notification of Family.    

 

The Randolph County Board of Education voted unanimously Monday night to place the excess levy on this November’s ballot.  The levy would generate $2.8 million dollars a year over a five year period.  Monies raised would go towards schools in the county as well as other activities such as music, arts and other extra curricular activates.

Rush hour traffic came to a halt on Monday in Elkins after a gasoline spill at Wamsley’s Service Station on Harrison Avenue.  The main artery in and out of town was slowed to a crawl as authorities created a detour around the spill to allow emergency crews to move in for the clean-up operation.  The Elkins City Police and Elkins Fire Department were still on the scene Monday evening.

 

A Barbour County man confesses to the break-in of two area stores.  23-year-old Dustin M. Thorne of Belington is accused of breaking into Poor Ralph’s Store and the Bulls Eye Sporting Goods store on August 7th.  In a written confession, Thorne admitted to breaking into both stores taking the cash registers and also guns from the sporting goods store.  A hearing is set for Friday.  Thorne is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.

 

A Taylor County man was seriously hurt in a single vehicle accident over the weekend.  The accident took place Sunday around midnight on Route 250.  18- year-old Warren C. Johns of Grafton was traveling south when he lost control of his car, striking a tree.  He was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital.  His condition is unknown at this time.  The Taylor County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

 

The Randolph County Commission will be holding a public forum for those wishing to express their views on the flood plain Ordinance.  The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Commission chambers at the courthouse annex.  The forum will begin at 7pm.

 

Davis and Elkins College will be holding a Welcome Fair on August 28 and 29 to welcome students back to the campus.  Area businesses will be joining in on the event.  President G. T. “Buck” Smith invites the community to participate in the many activities planned for that weekend.  Artist in residence, Jack Gibbons is scheduled to perform a free concert on Sunday evening.

A Buckhannon couple is arrested on drug related charges.  City Police took into custody 53-year-old Ronald Reed and 43-year-old Kathy Reed and charged them with the manufacturing of a controlled substance.  Buckhannon City Policeman Lt. Keith Rowan saw seven marijuana plants in their backyard located on Reger Street in Buckhannon.  Both are currently housed in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.  Assisting were members of the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department

 

43-year-old Marshall Wolfe of Youngstown, Ohio was taken into custody after a DNA test connected him to a sexual assault from nineteen years ago.  The incident occurred in February of 1991 when a 12-year-old Bruceton Mills girl was raped.  It was discovered that Wolfe had worked for the girl’s father at one time.  He is awaiting extradition in Ohio.

 

A 38-year-old inmate was convicted by a federal court in Clarksburg on Wednesday. Tony Lee Miller was convicted on one count of unlawful possession of an object designed as a weapon in May of 2009 while he was incarcerated in the Hazelton Prison.  Miller could face five additional years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

 

West Virginia’s biggest yard sale continues today and tomorrow in Buckhannon.  A similar yard sale is also going on in Weston.

20-year-old Ridge Huffman was sentenced in an Upshur County Courtroom Wednesday morning to life in Prison for the January 2009 death of Rebecca Gibson.  He had cut the throat and head of Gibson and left her body in a truck parked in front of his father’s house.  Huffman will be eligible for parole in 15 years and was given credit for time served.     

 

17 road projects will be keep the Department of Highways busy in Lewis County. Around $5.5 million dollars will be spent on projects within the county.  Receiving attention will be a four mile stretch of Route 33 between Pricetown and Weston.  Guardrail repair along Route 33 between Weston and Buckhannon and resurfacing in parts of the downtown district.  According to the State, close to $211 million dollars in stimulus money for maintenance and prevention will be spent on roads and bridges.

 

The Princeton Review came out with it’s rankings of Colleges in the Southeast and ranked among one of the best was West Virginia Wesleyan College.  Director of Admission to the college, John Waltz points to the college’s success sending students to graduate schools around the country and the consistency of its academic excellence.  The South east region includes 12 states, including Virginia, Kentucky and South Carolina.   Others to receive accolades were the University of Charleston, Bethany College, West Virginia University and Mountain State University

 

The main topic of discussion at Thursday’s Randolph County Commission meeting was the controversial Randolph County Flood Plain ordinance.  During the public comment period of the meeting Phil Hudock and Dr. Jerome Arnett spoke in opposition to the proposed ordinance and the affects on landowners rights. Also of concern was the portion of the ordinance that not only could fine you but, could mean jail time.  Commissioner Mike Taylor quickly spoke up to say that portion of the ordinance had been removed.  Commissioner Taylor went on to say that other small alterations were made in the floodplain ordinance and that anyone interested in picking up a copy of the ordinance at the courthouse Friday.  Taylor went on to let others know that a public forum will take place this Tuesday, August 17th at 7pm at the commission chambers at the annex.  Those who would like to express their views for or against the flood plain ordinance are encouraged to attend.

West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller was able to secure just over $111 million for West Virginia in Military Construction appropriations bill.  $1.5 million in funding for the planning and design for the replacement for the existing 1950s Field eminence Shop in Buckhannon.  Close to 6 million dollars at Camp Dawson near Kingwood for emergency backup power, new mail processing and identification card center, as well as upgrades to the current storm / sanitary sewer system and the electrical /utility systems.

 

A 50-year-old Cowen woman pled guilty to embezzlement before a Federal district Judge Tuesday morning in Elkins.  Sherri Lynn Hines embezzled just over $19,600 from the Cowen Post Office from July to November of 2009.  She could face up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to $250,000.  Hines is currently free on bond.

 

The Lewis County Parks and Recreation is attempting to raise funds to build a new pool.  The currently pool is 35 years old and found to have structural problems and may have to be shut down.  A bake sale and car wash as been planned at the Lewis County Park for Friday from 11:30am to 7:30pm with a pool party to following   A fund has been set up at the Citizen’s Bank of Weston for those wanting to make a donation.

 

More the $2.35 million dollars in funding for 2010 Student Support services grants will go to eight West Virginia Colleges and Universities.  Including Glenville State College receiving close to $239,000.  The grants come through the U. S. Department of Education.

Barbour County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Belington man on drug charges.  66-year-old John Elbert Rhoades was charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.  Sheriff’s Deputies then obtained a warrant to search his residence and discovered five 3 foot marijuana plants growing on his property.  Rhoades is currently out on a $25,000 bond.

 

The Salvation Army of Buckhannon is going through some tough times as their food pantry is just about bare.  Lt. Michele Henry of the Clarksburg District said “We see a lot more people coming in and needing assistance and that is one thing we do not turn away.  We need to make sure people have food during this hard time in the summer.”  What types of food would you like to see donated?   “Mostly non-perishable items like canned corn, green beans, boxes of pastas and cereals.  Also powdered milk as sometimes families do not have room in their refrigerator.  We also have a lot of frozen food items that come in.”  If you want to make a donation you can stop by the Salvation Army in Buckhannon located on North Spring Street or you can call 472 – 6165.

 

West Virginia Wesleyan College is tops in the State when it comes to recycling among all colleges and universities.  Bobcat nation took top honors in the state in the Recyclemania contest.  More then 600 colleges and Universities took part in this year’s contest, with Wesleyan taking the top honors in the state for the third consecutive year.  California State University of San Marcos won the national championship among the recycling schools.

20-year-old Ridge Huffman pled guilty Friday afternoon to the murder of Rebecca Gibson.  According to Upshur County Persecuting Attorney Jake Reger, the plea was for first Degree with the recommendation of mercy.  Huffman was charged with the January 2009 murder of Gibson, her body was found in a truck parked in front of Huffman’s Father’s house.  Huffman could face life in prison on the charge of first degree murder.  Sentencing is scheduled for August 11th.  

 

State Police arrested a Webster County man following a stabbing incident, 31- year-old Jeremiah Stout was taken into custody following a fight with another man at a residence in Webster Springs.  Stout allegedly used a carpenter’s knife and had cut the man several times.  He has been charged with malicious assault and wounding and is currently lodged in the Central Regional Jail.

 

West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller secured $16 million for the State in a commerce, justice and science appropriations Bill.  The federal Funding bill helps support forensic science facilities as well as local Police Departments and community organizations.  Of those to benefit were emergency radio communications systems in Pendleton County.  The Pendleton County Commission had requested $1,500,000.  This would go towards emergency services as well as law enforcement.

State Police responded to a tractor trailer accident Friday morning on Route 151, known as old Route 33.  According to police the load on the truck shifted causing the truck to overturn losing it’s load of timber.  There were no injures and no citations were given. The investigation was handled by trooper K.A. Corley of the West Virginia State Police.

 

30-year-old Michael Little entered a guilty plea to one count of possessing a knife while incarcerated at the USP Hazelton in April of this year.  Federal Judge Irene M. Keely sentenced Little to serve an additional 6 month consecutive to the sentence he is currently serving. 

 

There is a new addition to the Randolph County Prosecutor’s office.  Alexandria Solomon was sworn in recently as the county’s new assistant prosecutor.  Solomon brings her experience having worked in Fayette County and as a Circuit Judge Law Clerk in Raleigh County.  Her job will consist of handling juvenile and abuse and neglect cases.

 

For those that have not registered to vote for the primary in West Virginia, today is the last day to do so.  A special upcoming election for the U.S. Senate will take place August 28th.  The election is to fill the seat of Senator Robert C. Byrd who passed away earlier this summer.  Early voting will take place August 20th. 

 

The Lewis County Commission held a meeting today at 10am at the Garton Plaza.  Some of the topics of discussion were the possible relocation of the West Virginia University Extension Office, PATH and a report on the Lewis / Upshur Spay-neuter program.

State Police were called to an ATV accident Thursday night.  The accident took place in the Sands Run Road area of Tallmansville around 7:30pm.  Two teenagers, a boy and a girl lost control on their ATV both were seriously injured and taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital.  A helicopter from Health Net had been called in but due to weather conditions could not get to the scene.  The condition of the two teens is not known at this time.  Assisting were members of the Washington District and the Upshur County EMS.

 

Power is slowly being restored in parts of North Central West Virginia.  There are still parts of the area that are still waiting for power.  Alleghany Power still list Grafton with 258 without power and Slatyfork with 405 without power.  Preston County has a total of 367 with Bruceton Mills logging 230 of the 367 outages. In Barbour County, Philippi has 80 while Moatsville has 37.  Alleghany Power hopes to have the power on in most of North Central West Virginia by this evening.

 

Buckhannon City Council will be holding a special meeting on Tuesday, August 10th.  Topic of discussion will be the court cases and hearings concerning the dispute between the Buckhannon City Council and the Convention and Visitors Bureau.  The meeting is scheduled for 7pm Tuesday.

 

Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 57 year old Randall E. Bibb Sunday.  Bibb was charged with one count of battery and one count of stalking.  He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $25,000.

Another series of severe thunderstorms swept across the state on Thursday as crews worked to repair downed lines and restore power to thousands of customers after Wednesday’s storms.  Alleghany Power Manager of External Communications, Mark Nitowski talks about the damage done on Wednesday. The Weston City Council approved the first reading of a sewer rate ordinance Monday night, which, if passed would result in an 11% increase in Sewer fees for those living inside and outside of the city.  The vote was split with Mayor Julia Spelsberg casting the deciding vote.  The sewer ordinance must go through two more readings before taking effect. The second reading is scheduled for August 23rd.  The third reading would lead to the passage of the ordinance.   

 

A total of 49 indictments were brought down by the August term of the Pocahontas County Grand Jury Tuesday. Of those 18-year-old Luca J. Byrd and 21-year-old Beau R. Hawkins of Marlinton both of Marlinton on 1 count of sexual assault in the 3rd degree.  51-year-old John F. Rogers of Hillsboro for 2 counts of sexual assault in the 1st degree and 1 count of sexual abuse by a parent or guardian.  A total of 15 people were charged.

 

A trail date has been set for a Virginia man accused of killing his girlfriend.  20- year-old Ridge Lee Huffman of Stuarts Draft is charged with the first degree murder of girlfriend Rebecca Gibson of Waynesboro, Virginia.  Huffman allegedly killed Gibson in the Wal-Mart parking lot in January of 2009 leaving her body in his car which had been parked in front of his father home.  Huffman claims to have multiple personalities.  Jury selection is August 17th with the trail set to begin on August the 18th.

Fire crews from Beverly, Elkins and Belington responded to a fire on the Kings Run Road South of Elkins Monday afternoon around 3 pm.  A house belonging to Junior Martin was fully engulfed by the time fire crews arrived.  The blaze was brought under control within an hour.  The fire is believed to be electrical in nature. The house was determined to be a total loss.   

 

A new Superintendent of schools has been hired in Barbour County.  By a unanimous vote, the board hired Dr. Ben Guido.  Guido is currently employed by the Harrison County School system as a Principal at Norwood.  Guido will replace Deedra Lundeen who took over as Superintendent of Schools in Grant County.  Guido’s first day on the job will be Wednesday.

 

The Buckhannon Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at the Fred Eberle Technical Center Monday morning.  An electrical fire broke out at the Timber Industrial Building.  The fire was contained within half an hour.  No internal damage to the building but close to $5,000 damage was done to the out side of the building. 

 

State Police and the Harman Fire Company responded to a motorcycle accident near the Randolph / Pendleton line Monday afternoon around 3:30pm.  Richard Montgomery of Chicago, Illinois was traveling west when he lost control of his motorcycle and hit an embankment.  Health net was called in and Montgomery was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown.  Trooper D.M. Mathews is handling the investigation.

 

The Philippi Police Department is investigating complaints from several citizens within the City of a possible phone scam.  A caller poses as a survey taker for the City Of Philippi and requesting personal information about the person and their residence.  The City of Philippi wants to let their citizens know that no such survey has been commissioned by the city.  Police remind you not to participate and the be cautious when giving out information.      

 

The Tucker County School Board’s newest hire, High School Principal Jay Hamric is happy to be in Tucker County and is already at work.  So why Tucker County?  Hamric says this is the place he wants to be and where he wants to raise his kids.

Fire broke out at a Lewis County home late Saturday morning.  Fire crews from Jackson’s Mill, Weston, Pricetown and Jane Lew called out to the intersection of Valley Chapel and the Old Mills Road to a single structure fire around 11:30.  Crews got the blaze under control within the hour.  The cause has not been determined.  The house was deemed a total loss.  The owner’s name was not available at the time of this report.  The State Fire Marshall’s office along with the Jackson’s Mill Fire company is handling the investigation. 

 

Another successful Relay for Life took place over the weekend in Upshur County.  According to the event chairman, Virginia Zirkle $112, 669 was raised at this year’s event.  First place honors for the most laps went to the Upshur County Teenage Republicans and the Young Democrats with 120 laps.  Buckhannon Academy’s Pioneers walked 118 laps.  Zirkle stated that they expect more money to come in between now and the event wrap up on September 9th. 

 

Joe Smith of Marlinton was recently elected as Vice-Commander by the West Virginia Department of the American Legion during the 92nd convention which was held in early July in Charleston, South Carolina.  Smith joined American Legion Post 50 in 1973 and has held every position within the Legion.  He was twice named Legionnaire of the year.  He is the longest serving commander of Post 50.  Smith will serve a one year term till the next election.

Senator Jay Rockefeller announced Friday that the Federal Communications Commission awarded West Virginia $2.2 million in “E” – rate funds through the schools and libraries program.  Counties that will receive funding are Lewis, Randolph, Harrison, Kanawha, Marion, Mineral, Raleigh and Wood.  The funding will provide access to technology that will improve the way people learn and the way children are taught.  More accessibility to the Internet for schools and libraries. 

 

A Preston County man and a Tucker County juvenile are the first charged and convicted with violating a new wildlife law passed this year by the West Virginia State Legislature.  22-year-old Mike A. Chapman of Aurora and an unnamed juvenile from Tucker County were charged with spotlighting, carrying a loaded firearm in a vehicle and illegal killing of wildlife.  The deer was killed in the Aurora area.  Fine and court costs totaled $2,400; both will be required to do several hours of community service.  The new law that was passed and went into affect this past June provides additional replacement costs be collected from persons who are convicted of illegally killing wildlife, with additional costs based on the antler size of a deer.

 

The Cass Scenic Railroad State Park will be hosting a photography workshop featuring National award winning photographer Clayton Spangler.  The event is scheduled for September the 10th through the 12th.  All Skill levels are welcomed and participants should bring their cameras, film and memory cards and outdoor clothing.  The event begins Friday evening at 7pm.

A Belington man is dead following a coal mine accident Thursday.  The accident took place at the Loveridge Coal mine near Fairview.  39-year-old Jesse Adkins was working on a piece of machinery when a chunk of coal broke off from the wall of the mine pinning him between the coal and some machinery.  Adkins was taken to Fairmont General Hospital and passed away that afternoon.  State and Federal officials are handling the investigation.  This is the 42nd coal mining death of this year.

 

The Upshur County Board of Education appointed Lance Koury to fill the seat left vacant by Aubrey Wilson.  Wilson was elected to the position in the May primary election and passed away earlier this month.  Koury brings experience to the position as he had served the last term and chose not to run again this last election.  Koury will serve till the November election.  The filing for the position will start August the 2nd and end August 11th for the First District.  Filing fee is $25.00.

 

Plans are on hold concerning a truck stop in the Jane Lew area along I-79.  The Company Pilot could not guarantee it would build the Flying “J’ Truck Stop.  The truck stop would have produced 50 jobs.  The Lewis County Development Authority stated that they have two fast food restaurants that have expressed interests in building in the Jane Lew  area.

Two fugitives from Upshur County were arrested by State Police in New Mexico.  John Shipman and Susan Halterman were wanted by the Buckhannon City Police for allegedly selling Methamphetamine.  At the time of his escape, Shipman was on home confinement on a DUI charge and had cut his tracking anklet and had stolen a vehicle belonging to his Nephew.  At the time of their arrest, they were believed to be heading to Arizona to Halterman’s Mother’s home.  They are awaiting extradition.

 

Wednesday saw several cases come before Judge Alan D. Moats of the Barbour County Circuit Court.  Of those were Gary Wayne Clayton who entered a plea to Grand Larceny and Conspiracy.  He was sentenced to one to ten years for grand larceny and one to five years for conspiracy.  Judge Moats said the sentences will be served consecutively.  Tyrick Banks was sentenced to one to five years for the delivery of a controlled substance.  A total of nine cases came before the court on Wednesday.   

 

Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputies, along with the Leading Creek Fire Department were called to a motorcycle accident early Thursday morning. The accident took place on Route 219 near Kerens.  He was taken to the Davis Memorial Hospital with head injures.  His name was not available at the time of the accident.  The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

 

State Police in Elkins recovered stolen copper wire that had been reported missing from an area company.  According to authorities close to 400 feet of copper wire had been reported missing from J. C. Welding.  Not long after, Police discovered the wire at a local recycling area.  Authorities are still following up on leads.  Should you have any information, please contact the State Police at 637 - 0200.

Two Upshur County residents are arrested on drug related charges.  Taken into custody were 25-year-old James E. Hovis of French Creek and 27-year-old Regina K. Wagner of Tallmansville.  During a routine traffic stop just outside of Walkersille,  Lewis County Sheriff’s Deputies discovered 53 grams of Sudephdrine in the back of the car as well as materials used to manufacture Methamphetamine.  Both have been charged with illegal storage of anhydrous ammonia and materials used as a precursor for the manufacturing of Methamphetamine.  Both are currently housed in the Central Regional Jail.  Bond was not set.

 

State Police arrested an Elkins man early Tuesday morning during a break-in.  Taken into custody was 46-year-old James Wegman.  Wegman had broken into a home in the Faulkner Road area.  Following a scuffle with the owner of the home, he was pinned by the owner till police arrived.  It was also discovered that he had broken into some vehicles earlier that evening.  Wegman is charged with

burglary, breaking and entering, battery and obstructing an officer.  He is currently being held in the Tygart valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.

 

The Parsons Detachment of the West Virginia State Police arrested a former Davis resident Tuesday morning who had been walking naked.  Police discovered 46 year old Jack Goldstein walking nude down Route 219 south from Oakland to Davis.   Mr. Goldstein claimed he was an Iranian Diplomat on a religious walk.  Goldstein has been charged with indecent exposure, obstructing a police officer and battery of a police officer.

 

The Coalton Fire Company was called to a structure fire Tuesday in the Norton area.  The blaze was brought under control within a half an hour.  Cause has not been determined and the name of the owner was not available at the time of this report.  Coalton was assisted by members of the Elkins and Junior Fire Departments.

A new Principal was hired at Monday night’s Tucker County School Board meeting.  By a unanimous vote, James Hamrick was hired to fill the position.  Hamrick, a Mineral Wells native, brings his experience in administrative rolls with International schools.  He and his wife have a summer home in Tucker County.  Hamrick replaced Roger Cade who held the position for less then a month before resigning and taking a similar job in Ohio

 

West Virginia State Police arrested a Weston man on five counts of sexual abuse that dates back 25 to 50 years.  76-year-old Harry Goldsmith was charged with sexual abuse by a parent or guardian.  Four different women gave statements of the abuse with some of the abuse dating back to childhood.  Goldsmith is currently being held in the Central Regional Jail on a $200,000 bond. 

 

The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department is looking for a man who escaped from home confinement.  56-year-old John Shipman of Buckhannon left with 46-year- old Suzanne Halterman on Sunday.  They are in an Olds Achevia, West Virginia license plate number ORP – 613.  Shipman is also wanted by the Buckhannon City Police Department as well.  Should you have any information, please call the Sheriff’s Department at 472 – 1180.

 

The Randolph County Community Arts Center and the Old Brick Playhouse, two cultural landmarks of downtown Elkins, have been named to the West Virginia Historic Theatre Trail.  The Historic Theatres will be featured in a color brochure to be distributed around the State and beyond to promote tourism to West Virginia.

The Weston City Police along with the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department were called out to a single vehicle accident Sunday morning in which one man died.  23-year-old Michael Allen Clevenger of Camden was pronounced dead on the scene.  According to the reports, Clevenger lost control of his SUV, left the roadway and was ejected from the vehicle.  Alcohol and a high rate of speed are believed to be contributing factors. The accident took place on Route 33 near Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital.

 

Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested one woman on drug charges.  38-year-old Tammy Freidman of Mill Creek was charged with the delivery of a control substance.  The arrest took place around 11:30 Saturday night.  She is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $20,000 cash only Bond.

 

West Virginia Wesleyan College graduate Meaghan Cochrane received the 2010-2011 Rotary International District 7530 Ambassadorial Scholarship.  This will be for one year for the purpose of academic studies overseas.  Cochrane received a degree in English and will be using her scholarship toward her Masters.  She will be studying in Belgium.

 

A Preston County woman  was pronounced dead on the scene as the result of an accident Saturday morning.  75-year-old Ann Watkins was a passenger and here husband Lonnie was driving on I-79 when they stopped and were rear ended by a tractor-trailer.  Mr. Watkins was taken to Ruby memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown.  No charges have been filed at this time.  The Monongalia Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
