A fire broke out at a barn located on the Huttonsville Correctional Center's farm Friday night. Fire crews from four area fire companies were kept busy for four hours. Destroyed in the fire were farm chemicals and equipment. No one was injured. The building was deemed a total loss. Also suffering damages was a nearby State Agriculture building that was located on the Correctional Center's Farm. The state Fire Marshall's Office has been called in to investigate.
Fire broke out at a Mill Creek home early Sunday morning. The fire was contained with two hours. Thanks to a local resident, Mike Definbaugh, the family was awakened and taken out of the home safely. Damage estimates were listed at $150,000. Indications are that a space heater may have been the cause the blaze. The Huttonsville / Mill Creek Fire Department are handling the investigation.
A Webster County man has been arrested after a meth lab was discovered in his home. Taken into custody was 31 year old Tony Lee Wright and charged with the operation of a clandestine meth lab and possession of methamphetamine. Wright was taken into custody Friday night and is currently held in the Central Regional Jail. The State Police is handling the investigation.
The Adrian Public service district has received funding to extend the waterline which would assist two counties. The U. S. Department of Agriculture and Rural Development made the announcement on Friday that the Adrian Public Service District will receive a $1 million dollar grant that would bring service to homes in Upshur and WebsterCounties.

The Randolph County Commission along with the Roaring Creek Coal Company has teamed up to apply for a grant. The grant would go to pave and widen a road for easier access to the new coal company. The commission and the coal company applied to the state department of highways for the amount of $550,000. Located in the Ellamore area, Roaring Creek Coal plans to employ around 250 and hope to be up and running in early 2013.
U. S.Senators Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller announced that three fire companies received funding of just over $140,000 through the Homeland Security’s 2011 assistance to firefighters grant. Of those to receive funding was the Walkersville Fire Company in the amount of $10,973. Others to receive funding were Nutter Fort and Kenova.
The special prosecutor from Harrison County who was assigned to the investigation of the Beverly Fire chief and two law enforcement officers will no longer be handling the investigation. Indications are a conflict of interest. There is no word as to who will handle the case. The WV State Police is handling the investigation.
At a recent Pocahontas County Board of education meeting, the vice-president of the board, Leslie Cain, announced that she would be resigning as she plans to run for county assessor. Board president Kenneth Vance informed the board that they have 45 days to fill the position. The term for Cain’s Position ends on July 1st. Vance went on to say that they will be now three positions to fill on the board for the upcoming May election.

Tuesday, the Upshur County Sheriff’s department along with the P.R.O. Officer of Buckhannon-Upshur High School arrested 18 year old Jeffery Andrew Saltis of Buckhannon on the charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Saltis had offered money to a juvenile to commit battery against another student. Saltis was arraigned before an Upshur County Magistrate and is currently free on a $1,000 bond.
A Barbour County woman was injured in a single vehicle accident on Tuesday morning. 61 year old Cindy Gootz of Flemington lost control of her vehicle on Route 76 running it into a ditch. She was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The Philippi Detachment of the WV State Police is handling the investigation.
The thumbs-up has been given to the construction plans for the new Lewis County Judicial Annex. According to the commission the $7 million dollar project will be getting under way soon as there is enough money for it in the budget. The complex will house law enforcement, all judicial departments which include the judges and courts.
An area restaurant manager received a big surprise Tuesday afternoon. Randy Westfall manager of McDonald’s of Elkins received the highest honor the Ray Kroc Award and with that award came a check for $2,500. Ray Kroc is the founder of the famous food chain. McDonald’s gives out the award to the top 1% of the managers in the company for their superior performance and achievement.
A testing bill is moving on in the State Legislature . The Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday passed unanimously a bill that would outlaw texting and using a hand-held cell phone while driving. The bill will now go before the full Senate. A similar version is being considered in the House.

A Tucker county man was charged Tuesday on five counts of animal cruelty. 19 year old Joshua Mitchell of Parsons was pouring pure bleach into five separate dog bowls at the dog pound. He is currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
The Buckhannon Fire Department was called out to a house fire located on Jack Lane in Tennerton around 5 pm Monday night. The blaze was contained within an hour. The cause is believed to be electrical in nature. No one was home at the time of the fire. The house has been deemed a total loss.
The Lewis County Senior Center will be holding a free seminar on the “Affordable Health Care Act” on Thursday, February 9th at 12 noon at the Center. Lisa Diehl, Regional Coordinator for West Virginians for Affordable healthcare, will provide and objective overview of the Health Care Act. Free materials will be provided.
A Buckhannon man was arrested last week for pulling a pellet gun on Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies. 51 year old Haywood J. Godfrey was charged with obstructing an officer. Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies were attempting to serve three warrants from LewisCountyon Godfrey when he pulled out the gun. The officers were able to snatch the gun away without incident. It was later discovered that the weapon was a pellet gun. Godfrey is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $5,000 bond.

A brewery is coming to Elkins. Davis and Elkins College grad Tim Powell recently purchased what is known as the Thompson Building located on Davis Avenue, plans to put in a Brewery and Hostel. Powell will also be making homemade sodas as well. The establishment that will be known as the “Brewstal” will be located on the first floor with the hostel located on the second floor. Powell hopes to have the kegs up and flowing by the fall.

The Buckhannon City Police Department has been given the go ahead to hire a provisional officer by City Council. According to Police Chief Matt Gregory, the department has been short-handed for sometime and the extra help was needed till the newest member of the department graduates from the academy. Former police officer Adam Gissy who left the force in 2010 will fill in to assist the department. If anyone should have an interest in becoming a Buckhannon police officer you can call 304-472-5723.
Two sheriff’s departments are investigating the death of a 6 day old infant in Taylor County. Harrison and Taylor Counties will be jointly investigating the death of the infant. The law requires that any infant or child’s death must be investigated. There were no further details on the case.
The Upshur County Relay for Life kicked off their 2012 campaign with it annual dinner last night in Buckhannon. The organization is currently signing up teams for the Relay which will be held in July of this year. Over the 14 years of existence, the Upshur County Relay for Life has raised $1.5 million in the fight against cancer.
A meeting will take place this Monday night to discuss the renovation of the old First Ward School building in South Elkins. Plans are to transform the school into 16 apartments for seniors ages 55 and older. The meeting will take place at Jennings Randolph elementary School at 6 pm. One man is hospitalized following a single vehicle accident. Fire crews from Jane Lew and Weston responded to the Lifes Run Road around 10am. A man had lost control of his vehicle and was thrown from the car. He was taken to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department has located the body of a man who had been reported missing for two days. After an extensive search the body of 55 year old Gary Bailey was found in the Buckhannon River Wednesday morning around 10:30. The cause of death has not been determined. Authorities say that Bailey may have had a medical condition. Bailey’s body was sent to the State Medical examiner’s office in Charleston. The Upshur County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
23 people were arraigned before Judge Alan D. Moats Wednesday in a Taylor County Courtroom. Of those arraigned were 26 year old James Moyer for malicious wounding and second degree sexual assault. Also arraigned was Zachery Dalton on burglary and malicious wounding charges. 42 year old Douglas Hester was arraigned on the charge of the delivery of a controlled substance.
The Department of Highways is continuing construction on the Crystal Springs Bridge located on Route 92 between Elkins and the Crystal Springs exit off Corridor-H. The public is encouraged to use alternate routes to by pass the work. The Department of Highways expects the construction to last approximately 10 months.

TRG Customers Solutions announced that they will be expanding. The company plans 150 new hires in Elkins. This will bring the Elkins Center to 400 people, making it the second largest employer in Randolph County. TRG is a call center that provides client services and customer support to Fortune 500 global companies. The company recently added 150 to their Beckley location and also has a center in Charleston. They are holding an open house recruitment today and Friday from 9am till 2 pm. TRG employs 5,000 worldwide.
Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies have arrested a Buckhannon man on theft charges. Steven R. Tinney, Jr. was taken into custody and charged with grand larceny. Tinney had taken Aluminum rims from an area business located on the Hickory Flats Road. He posted a bond of $25,000.
The United States Attorney’s Office, along with the ATF and Harrison County law enforcement agencies announced that 21 individuals were arrested last year have been convicted and sentenced for heroin and firearms trafficking. Of those were 31 year old Joseph Boyd Swiger of Jane Lew and Eric James Golden of Horner for distributing heroin within 1,000 feet of a protected location.
The second person has died as the result of a two-vehicle collision on January 12th on Pickle Street off old route 33. Henry Howard Jenkins died from injuries he sustained from that accident. His, wife Lou Ann Jenkins died on the scene. According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, Marcella Jamison of Weston had crossed the center line striking the Jenkins car. The accident is still under investigation.

A Taylor County Grand Jury met Monday for its January session and came back with a total of 33 indictments. Of those were 61 year old Charles E. Pinell, Rhonda L. Colisino, all of Grafton, for Burglary and conspiracy and 31 year old Robert J. Craner of Bellview for burglary. Also indicted was 26 year old James D. Moyer of Flemington for malicious assault and second degree sexual assault.
A string of burglaries and break-ins has picked up in the Philippi area of Barbour County. Many vehicles and some houses have been broken into with items missing. Sgt. Jeff Walters of the Philippi city police says the poor economy is some of what’s contributing to the rise in B and Es. Walters went on to say some of the stolen property has been found and that arrests have been made but, that doesn’t mean the break-ins have ended. Recommendations from Police are to keep your cars locked and in a well lit area and a porch light on till you go to bed.
Good news has come to citizens of Upshur County, the Sheriff’s Department now accepts debit and credit cards. Citizens of the county will now have the ability to pay their licenses, fire fees, taxes, and yes, even your speeding tickets. The Sheriff’s Department reminds those that the credit card companies and banks may add a small charge fee for the use of the card.

Fire crews were called out around 2:30 this morning to a structure fire on the Laurel Mountain Road near the Barbour / Randolph County line. The flames were brought under control within an hour. The house was deemed a total loss. No one was injured. The fire is believed to have started due to a kerosene heater.
Fire crews from the Washington District, Ellamore and Buckhannon were kept busy Friday with a fire on the Lee Glass Road. When crews arrived they found the house fully engulfed. The blaze was brought under control within an hour. No one was home at the time of the fire. Cause is believed to be a wood stove.
A Lewis County man was arrested for the break-in of an area restaurant. Taken into custody was 19 year old Markus Wayne Wilt of Weston and charged with the November Break-in of Spanky’s Bar and Grill. Authorities are continuing to investigate this incident. The State Police in Elkins are investigating a stolen piece of farm equipment. A 2005 Caterpillar Mini Excavator is believed to have been taken in late December from the Oak Ridge Trenching and Excavating company. The owner is offering a reward for its recovery. Lewis County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Harrison County man for driving under the influence which resulted in the death of another person. 30 year old Gary Martin Snow was taken into custody Friday after a warrant was issued. Snow was the driver in an accident on I-79 in October of last year in which the passenger was killed. Snow was charged with DUI causing death.

Fire crews were called to a blaze at the Rainbow Tire center in Preston County on Wednesday. The fire was contained within half an hour. Smoke damage was reported, their were no injuries. Cause has not been determined. According to authorities, the owner plans to open back up today.
One person was flown to the hospital following a two car collision Thursday morning on Route 250 in BarbourCounty. According to State Police, a pick-up truck collided with a box truck around 8:30. The passenger of the pick-up truck Zachery Williams was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital. According his father he suffered internal injuries and a broken leg. State Police are handling the investigation.
A warrant was served in Nicholas County for a Buckhannon woman wanted on drug related charges. Arrested by Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies was 29 year old Tonya Sherrele Thomas for the delivery of a controlled substance, Percocet. Thomas was arraigned at Nicholas County Magistrate’s office with bond set at $25,000.
One man was arrested Thursday by State Police for a string of break-ins of vehicles in and around the Elkins area. Taken into custody was 23 year old Eric Lee Hedrick of Elkins and charged with 11 counts of breaking and entering, petit larceny, stolen property and conspiracy. Hedrick pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four year in the regional jail. More arrests may be forthcoming. State Police remind you to keep your vehicles locked and in or near a lit area.

Gary Morris, Prosecuting attorney for Lewis County is currently working with Federal Law enforcement on consolidating charges against Michael Forsythe. Forsythe was arrested earlier this month in the state of Florida for the armed robbery of the Huntington Bank of Weston last August. He is also accused of a bank robbery in Kentucky. Those charges would be brought in the state of Florida.
A Taylor County man pleaded guilty to bank robbery charges Wednesday. Justin Adams is accused of robbing the BB&T Bank in Grafton In February of 2010. Adams could face up to 25 years in prison. Also pleading guilty was a former librarian for embezzlement and falsifying accounts. Marli Jenkins agreed to pay $300,000 in restitution for her crimes and could face up to 30 years in prison.
The Randolph County School system has been implementing their new random drug testing policy with the hopes of cutting down drug use in the school system. The drug tests will take place once a month. First offense the individual will be subject to intervention, second offense would result in a suspension for extracurricular activities. So far, every test has come back negative.
Reduction in force proceedings got underway Wednesday evening at the Randolph County Board of Education office. 26 teaching positions could be cut and four teachers requesting hearings at last night’s meeting. Board members are looking at the possibility of the loss of federal funding and are preparing as such. Transfer hearings will get underway Tuesday with voting on the rifs to be held on Wednesday.
The Roaring Creek Coal Company is getting things underway to start mining in the Ellamore area. One of the first projects will be to open up the area to bring the coal out. Plans are to replace the Orr Bridge Railroad Tunnel under the Kingsville Station Roadnear the Randolph / Upshur County line. Construction on that project will get underway April 2 and should be completed by the end of August. Through traffic will be detoured by way of Randolph County Route 17 or Barbour County Routes 19 and 17.

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Department is in need of your help in an armed robbery. Police were called to the Hot Spot near Pruntytown around 11:45 Tuesday night. According to authorities a man standing around 5’ 10” wearing a black ski mask, sunglasses, black pants and a black jacket pulled out a small caliber hand gun and demanded money. The man took an undisclosed amount of money along with a cell phone. If you have any information you are asked to call the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department at 304-265-3428.
Plans for expansion are in the works for a local company. TRG Customer Solutions is looking to add to their workforce at their Elkins center. The expansion is to be announced on January 24 at their Wilson Lane Center. TRG took over the Aegis Center when it closed its doors in August of 2010.
State Police have apprehended a 15 year old boy who was reported missing from the Olympic Center in PrestonCounty. According to police the boy had escaped from the center late Tuesday and was found early this morning.

The body discovered in Arden near the Tygart River have been identified and two men have been arrested. The body was identified as 20 year old Thomas Ray Blankenship of West Union. Taken into custody and charged with first Degree murder were 28 year old William Murray and 28 year old Clayton Collins. According to Authorities, Blankenship died from being stuck on the head. The two men stated that Blankenship had stolen some property. Both men are currently being held in the North Central Regional Jail with no bail set.
West Virginia Wesleyan College has a new facility on campus. The College recently remodeled Jenkins Hall into a wellness center which will feature several multi-purpose rooms and a workout center. School officials stated that the facility will be for everyone and not just those on campus.
High school Basketball rankings are out. Girls Class Single ‘A’ have the warriors of Pocahontas County at number 6 and the Lady Mountain Lions of Tucker County at number 10. Boys High School Basketball rankings class Double ‘A” has WebsterCountyat number 9. Boys Class Single ‘A’ has Tucker County at the number 10 spot.
The Parsons City Police have arrested a man in connection with a house burglary. Taken into custody was 34 year old Joseph Uffman of Parsons and charged with the theft of nine guns and other miscellaneous items. The break-in took place on December 11th of last year. Uffman is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $5,000 cash only bond. Police Chief Ed Surguy stated that there may be more charges pending. Assisting were members of the Tucker County Sheriff’s department and the WV State Police.
A boil water advisory is still into effect for the City of Philippi water customers. According to sources, the problem stems from an intake pump that is not working properly. The boil water advisory is in affect until further notice.

The Harrison County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has been selected as the special prosecutor in the case involving Beverly Fire Chief Jeffery Pritt, a vehicle accident and a possible cover-up. Last Tuesday, Randolph County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Parker filed a motion for a special prosecutor citing his reason as his involvement with local law enforcement. In that case, a Randolph County Deputy has been suspended and an Elkins Police Officer is under investigation.
The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department was kept busy recently with two arrests. Taken into custody was 19 year old Kevin McCartney of Crawford on a felony charge of grand larceny involving an ATV on the Slab Road. McCartney is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $30,000 bond. In a separate case, Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 20 year old Jennifer G. Heatherly of Buckhannon on the felony charge of the delivery of a controlled substance. She is currently free on bond in the amount of $20,000.
Friday night was the night to salute our furry friends in Randolph County. Cocktails for Canines helped raise monies needed for the animal shelter in the county. Efforts helped the animal shelter raise just over $1,500.
Leaders of Create Buckhannon will be looking for some assistance in completing the renovations to JawboneParkand the Farmer’s Market. According to Buckhannon Street Commissioner Jerry Arnold what’s left of the grant money will not be enough to complete the project. Arnoldwent on to say that they will be looking for funds to complete the paving, brick and electrical work that needs done. They hope to have the project done by May.

One person is dead following a two car collision Thursday morning in Lewis County. According to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department the accident took place around 11am on Route 33 west in the Pickle Street area near the Gilmer – Lewis County line. 56 year old Lou Ann Jenkins who was a passenger in one of the cars succumbed to her injuries on the scene. The drivers from both cars were taken to Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital and later transported to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.
Another business will be closing in the area. Delhaize America, the Belgian owners of Food Lion, Bloom and Bottom Dollar Food grocery chains will be closing a total of 126 stores including 113 Food Lion locations, one of the which is their Elkins Store on the Beverly Pike. 25 employees will be displaced as the result. According to the Delhaize, a severance package will be offered to those that qualify.
The Weston City Police will be hiring another officer. According to the department there has been an increase in calls and they are looking to replace departed officers. Two have left the department and one is currently on military leave. Applications are due by January 18 with the written test on the 19th.
Mon Power will conduct a second emergency outage on Tuesday, January 17, from 5 a.m.to 9 a.m.to replace insulators on another area of the same line. The outage will affect 1,868 customers in and around the Snowshoe area, primarily the resort.

Sheriff’ John Hawkins has confirmed that the grave in Barbour County did hold human remains. Around noon Wednesday afternoon, the State Medical Examiner’s Office assisted in recovering the body of a white male that was approximately 6 foot tall and around 225 pounds. The identity is unknown and has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s office in Charleston for autopsy and identification. At this time, the case is being treated as a homicide. The Sheriff’s department is unsure if the crime occurred in Barbour County.
One person was injured after a truck lost control and ran into a building Tuesday morning in Webster County. An employee of the Custard Stand was injured and taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital. Significant damage was done to the building. The restaurant in the building was unharmed. The Department of Transportation has been called in to investigate the accident.
Mon Power will disrupt electrical service this Monday, January 16th in Pocahontas County for the purposes of repair work to a transmission line. Locations affected are Marlinton, Beard Heights, Buckeye, Edray, Campbelltown, Brownsburg, Thorny Creek, Clawson, Huntersville and Dunmore. The power outage will taken place from 9amtill 2pm.
A Belington Woman was sentenced in a Federal Court Wednesday. 30 year old Lacrisha Corley was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment to be followed by three years supervised release. Corley plead guilty to one count of maintaining a residence in Clarksburg for the purposes of storing, distributing and using crack cocaine and heroin from August to September 2009.

Human remains were discovered along the Tygart River near Arden Tuesday afternoon. The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department said that a resident reported to them the discovery of a shallow grave and what looked to be the bone from a human leg. There was the appearance of a small hole dug and rocks stacked on the grave. According to Sheriff John Hawkins the anthropological team of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington D. C. has been called in for assistance.
A motion was filed Tuesday by Randolph County Prosecuting Attorney Michael Parker for a special prosecutor from outside of the area to handle the case of a wrecked vehicle and possible cover up involving Beverly Fire Chief Jeffery Pritt. The investigation stems around a car crash on December 17th in which possible evidence was removed and the possibility that the wrong driver may have been at the scene. The investigation was handled by the WV State Police.
Did you feel the earth move Tuesday afternoon? Well the people of Braxton County did. According to the U. S. Geological Survey a small Quake took place just 10 miles west of Gassaway. The quake magnitude measured 2.8. No damage was reported.
The January session of the Upshur County Grand Jury was held Tuesday with a total of 27 individuals indicted. Of those indicted were 27 year old Howard Clarence Jenner of Buckhannon for murder, attempted murder and malicious wounding. Jenner allegedly shot and killed his Aunt and wounded his Uncle in late December.

Pocahontas County prosecuting Attorney Donna Price has been charged by the Lawyer Disciplinary Board with violations of the rules of professional conduct in 20 cases. The violations cover criminal, juvenile as well as abuse and neglect cases. The Board received complaints from Judges James Rowe and Joseph Pomponio as well as Sheriff David Jonese and other law enforcement officials. A hearing had been scheduled for late this month but, upon the request of Price’s attorney, has been delayed for 90 days.
The Preston County Commission voted unanimously Monday evening to change some precincts in the area. The commission has combined some precincts while eliminating others. According to Commission President Craig Jennings, this will make it easier for voters and will help reduce the over all budget of the county.
A Green Bank principal that had been reported missing has been found. According to Pocahontas County Sheriff David Jonese, Melvin Lindsey was located in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Lindsey was report safe and in good health. According to Jonese it was thanks to a cell phone that they were able to locate Lindsey. No reason has been given for his recent disappearance.

Fire broke out early this morning at an area restaurant. Fire crews from Buckhannon, the Warrenand Washington Districts and Weston were called out around 2amto Santi’s Restaurant located on Pocahontas Street. It took fire crews close to three hours to contain the blaze. No cause has been determined but, one of the members of the fire department stated that when they arrived the back door to the restaurant was open. The State Fire Marshall’s Office has been called in to investigate.
The Lewis County Sheriffs’ Department is investigating a shooting that took place Sunday morning on Route 33 between Weston and Buckhannon. 34 year old Eric Loudin had stopped to assist a driver who had pulled over to the side of the road. Two men got out of the car, demanding his car and threatening him. Loudin then pulled a gun and in the struggle, the gun went off injuring Loudin. He was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital and is listed in Stable condition. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

Students were moved to location away from the school. A K-9 unit from Morgantown was brought in to search the high school. The building was ruled clear. The people of Upshur County may see a change in where they vote in the upcoming election. At Thursdays meeting, the Upshur County commission voted to redistrict the county. The vote was held following a public hearing to get input. With no objections, the commission then voted. The precincts we be adjusted and go into effect by January 9th which is the deadline to file and run for political office.
A Randolph County girl that had been reported missing has been found. 13 year old Brianna Keefer was reported missing Wednesday afternoon. Keefer had contacted a woman at the Middle School and both went down to the City Police office and Keefer is now back with her family
A Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputy has been put on administrative leave as part of an investigation into a truck wreck involving Beverly Fire Chief Jeff Pritt. According to State Police a vehicle accident took place on the Files Creek Road in mid-December in which evidence was removed from the scene and the person found at the scene was not the original driver of the truck. The investigation also includes an officer of the Elkins City Police Department. The matter then will be turned over to the Randolph County Prosecutor’s Office.
The people of Lewis County will be electing a new prosecuting attorney in the next election. The current prosecuting attorney recently announced that he will not be seeking another term. Gary Morris thanks those who elected him and gave credit to his staff for the work they have done. Morris’ term will end in November of 2012.

Thanks to some tips, the Belington City Police arrested a fugitive from justice Wednesday morning. Taken into custody was 33 year old Paul Anthony Hedrick of Buford, North Carolinaon a parole violation. His original arrest was for assault with a deadly weapon and assault by strangulation. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail awaiting extradition. Bond has been withheld.
Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Buckhannon woman on drug charges. 35 year old Kelly J. Odell was charged with the delivery of a controlled substance. She was arraigned with bond set at $12,000. Odell is currently free on bond.
A Buckhannon man was named in a three count indictment in a Federal Court in Clarksburg. 45 year old James Russell Chewning was named in two counts of possession of a firearm in 2010 and one count of possession of a stolen firearm. If convicted, Chewning faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and fine of $250,000 on each count.

Fire crews in Southern Randolph County were called to a fire near Adolph around 4:30pm Tuesday evening. A trailer on the Prison Mine Roadhad caught fire. Due to inclement weather conditions it took fire fighters close to three hours to get the blaze under control. No injuries were reported, the owner’s name was not available at the time of this report and the cause has not been determined.
The Lewis County Commission has selected a new Commission President. Voted in as President was Commissioner Pat Boyles. Boyles expressed his gratitude and stated that he is looking forward to the challenge of the upcoming year. One of the items that Boyles is looking forward to is the completion of the new courthouse annex. Boyles hopes to get things started on the new annex in April. Lewis County Commission meetings are held every Monday at 10am.
The recent snow and cold temperatures were welcomed by Ski Resorts around the State of West Virginia. Snowshoe to Timberline, Canaan Valley to Winterplace received several inches of the white powder over the last 24 hours. Cross Country skiers were not left out as heavy snow came down at White Grass in Tucker County and Elk River in Pocahontas County. Resorts will be taking advantage of the cold temperatures to kick on the snow guns to produce more of the white stuff. Ski season around the state can run as late as early April.
A Taylor County Woman was sentenced in Federal Court in Wheelingon drug charges. 35 year old Casey Dawn Thacker of Hepzibah was sentenced to 15 months for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription as well not participating in a drug treatment nor notifying a probation officer. Thacker was originally sentenced to 3 years probation for aiding and abetting in the distribution of crack cocaine in 2008 and her probation revoked in 2009.

A recent move by the City of Buckhannon will help save money. At a recent meeting city council voted to change the date of the municipal election to make voting easier for city residents. The move would save close to $8,000. After two public hearings the council voted to move the filing period as well as the voting dates. January 14th will be the filing period for the municipal election with early voting to start on April 25th and the primary election will be held May 8th.
The West Virginia State Police are looking for a few good men and women. State Police are looking to grow their ranks. Classes will get underway in June with testing to start this Friday. The physical fitness and written test will be held this Friday and will be offered at the State Police Academy at Institute at 9am. You must be 21 years old age and a high school degree or GED. Fire companies from Ellamore, Buckhannon and the Warren District were called to a fire on the Hootin’ Hollow Road Friday afternoon. A single story house caught fire not far from the Phillips Dairy Roadand was brought under control within an hour. One person was injured during the fire and was flown by Healthnet for burns. The house was deemed a total loss.
Elkins City Police arrested a RandolphCountyman for desertion. 28 year old Brandon Gilbert Morris Ramsey had a Federal Warrant out for his arrest since September of 2011 for deserting the U. S. Army. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Jail on a $500,000 bond.

The State Police in Webster County have arrested a Gassaway man on drug charges. 25 year old Matthew Ward Friend was taken into custody on six felony charges of conspiracy and six felony charges of operating or attempting to operate a meth lab. Upon investigation by State Police, there were six drug labs present at Friend’s residence. He is currently being held in the Central Regional Jail.
The Barbour County River Rats continued a tradition as they gathered under the Sixth Street Bridge in Philippi for their annual Polar Bear plunge Sunday. Organizers say that despite cold temperatures they still enjoy participating. Monies raised goes to Barbour County

A preliminary hearing was held today for 27 year old Howard Clarence Jenner in Upshur County Circuit Court. Jenner is accused of the December 22nd shooting death of his Aunt, Beni Truex and wounding his Uncle Sherman Truex at their home located on the Hackers Creek Road. Jenner waived a hearing and is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail. His case has been bound over to circuit court.
Pocahontas County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Lewisburg man on burglary charges. Taken into custody was 21 year old Alexander Plummer. Plummer is accused of breaking into a home on December 6th. He is currently being held in the Regional Jail on a $10,000 bond.
It is projected that 250 post offices will be closed in the State of West Virginia as part of the Postal Services efforts to save money. Construction of the new Lewis County Courthouse has slowed. The State Historic Preservation office contacted the Lewis County Commission to inform them that a house that was torn down for the new annex was listed on the National Registry of historic buildings. According to the county administrator Cindy Whetzell, the commission believes there was some confusion with the former owner involving another house that the family owns. The county is working with the state office to come up with a mitigation plan as the house is already gone.
Doddridge County has approached the Lewis County Commission about parking their ambulances in Lewis County. The squad assists in transporting patients from the Buckhannon and Jane Lew areas and members would like to park the vehicles in Lewis County. Lewis County commissioners are looking to set up a meeting between the Doddridge and Lewis County
The MarlintonMiddle Schoolreceived some good news this week. The City National Bank made a $1,000 donation to the school to help fund the Respect and Protect program at the middle school. Respect and Protect is a self discipline program where kids are rewarded for good behavior. The school and bank have been in partnership for the past twenty years.

Some community improvement groups were recently informed that they would be receiving money for reforestation projects around the area. The Appalachian Coal Country Team donated $12,000 which is supported by the Appalachian Regional Commission. Of those to receive funding was the Blackwater North Fork Watershed Project. This affects not only public but, privately owned land.
The Weyerhaeuser Corporation recently donated money to assist an Upshur County program. The youth football league received $5,000 from the company. Members of the Weyerhaeuser have assisted in everything from coaching the teams to concessions to even being a team Mom. The Weyerhaeuser Giving Fund donates to communities in and around the area in which they have a plant.
This past Fall Bethany Williams was crowned the 2011 Elkin High School Homecoming Queen. Now she is trying to become America’s Homecoming Queen. Williams is just one of a small percentage of young ladies around the country that have been selected to participate in America’s Homecoming Queen at this year’s Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee. The selection process is based on academics, community activities, to just being a good person. The Liberty Bowl will be held On December 31st.
The Parsons City Council met recently and following an executive session, the council voted to give city employees a raise. According to City Administrator Jason Myers the workers had not had a raise in five years. City council also learned that they had received a grant of $1,350,000 for the waterline extension project for the Moore and Porterwood areas.

One woman was injured as the result of a house fire Friday afternoon in Upshur County. The fire broke out near the Bailey’s Ridge area. The blaze was brought under control within an hour. The woman was flown to the hospital with burns. The cause of the fire is suspicious in nature. The State fire Marshall’s Office has been called in to investigate. The Randolph County Commission held a special meeting this morning to announce the new prosecuting attorney. By a unanimous vote the commission, named Michael W. Parker the new prosecuting attorney. Parker had formerly served as assistant prosecutor under Earl Maxwell and Frank Bush. He is a graduate of the West Virginia University school of Law and until his appointment was a partner in the McNeer / Highland / McMunn and Varner Law Firm of Elkins. He will serve out the term formerly held by Richard Busch who had resigned December 5th.

State Police in Elkins are investigating the death of a two month old baby. The child reportedly passed away on Thursday afternoon in Beverly. The State Police are being assisted by the Crimes Against Children Unit.
Several drug arrests were made by the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department. Taken into custody was 22 year old Joseph W. Crislip of Helvetia for possession of 15 grams of marijuana. Also arrested was 49 year old Reona L. Heater for the delivery of a controlled substance.

The Weston City Police Department has been doing a follow-up investigation on the recent arrest of a Floridaman charged with the robbery of the Huntington Bank. 49 year old Michael Forsythe was positively identified as the person responsible for the August 6 bank robbery. Forsythe confessed to FBI agents of the robbery. He was arrested last Wednesday in Florida. More charges are pending.

A shooting took place Monday night on the Adolph Road just outside of Mill Creek. According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, they had been called out to a destruction of property in progress with gun shots fired. When they arrived a fight was in progress between two men. One victim had been shot and was taken to Davis Memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown. No names were available at the time of this report. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the WV State Police.
The FBI in Volusia, Florida have captured a man that is suspected of robbing the Huntington Bank in Weston in August of this year. According to the Weston City Police Department 49 year old Michael Forsythe was taken into custody and is wanted in several states for similar acts including the robbery of a U. S. Bank in Richmond, Kentucky.
In October, the Randolph County Commission voted to have the Prosecutor’s office investigated for some alleged improprieties. Tuesday, the commission released the findings to the public which were conducted by the Lees Law Firm of Charleston. Lees described the office as dysfunctional and that a lot of the problems had to do with personal matters. On December 5th, Richard Busch stepped down as the Randolph County Prosecutor.

One man is dead as the result of a single-vehicle accident Monday. According to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department 22 year old John Derrick Davis was traveling west on Route 33 when he went off the side of the road hitting a guardrail and flipping several times before coming to rest in a creek. Davis was pronounced dead on the scene.
Upshur County Sheriff’s deputies arrested an Ohioman on drug charges. 49 year old Richard Yeo has been charged with the delivery of a controlled substance and possession with intent to deliver. According to authorities he was traveling to Buckhannon to sell the prescription medication. Yeo is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond.
The City of Parsonsis looking into the building of a skate park. The location would be next to the River City Ball Park. City Council has already put $25,000 toward the park and looks to receive another $50,000 and a water conservation grant as well. They hope to start construction this spring. Completion should take approximately six weeks.

400 workers at a Moorefield plant have been let go. American Woodmark Corporation will be closing its doors early next year. According to the Virginia based company, officials have decided to cutback on their operations which included the closure of plants in Moorefield and Hazard, Kentucky.
The National Wild life Refuge will be expanding its property in the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge adding another 325 acres. The wildlife refuge in CanaanValleyis one of two national refuges in the state of West Virginia. The national Wildlife refuge System is a network of federal lands dedicated specifically to wildlife conservation.
The Class Triple All-State Football team was announced over the weekend with some area players making the list. On the first team all-state list was utility player Clayton Collett. Special honorable mentions went out to Chris Linger of Lewis County and Elkins Cody Knavenshue and Tanner Boatwright. Honorable mentions also went out to Matt Loughney of Buckhannon-Upshur, Nick Martin of Elkins and Joe Butcher of Lewis County.
$93,000 was recently awarded to non-profit organizations in Pocahontas, Randolph and Webster Counties thanks to the Snowshoe Foundation. According to Lauren Huber of the Foundation this is part of the grant / scholarship program to support the communities. $27,000 will be made available to local students in April of 2012. Pocahontas received close to $50,000, while Randolph received $33,000 and Webster $10,000.

The skeletal remains of a man found in the Mon Forest in Tucker County have been identified. The remains are that of 58 year old Michael Hamner of Thomas. Hamner had been reported missing by his family in January of this year. Foul play is not suspected. The remains were discovered by deer hunters last month. The state medical examiners office has not determined the cause of death.
One person was injured in a fire Thursday morning. Crews were called out around 10:30 to a house on the Frog Hollow Roadoff Route 50 near Tunnelton. The blaze was brought under control within an hour. The extent of the persons injuries is not known and the cause of the fire has not been determined.
Plans are in the works by a natural gas company from Texasto build a pipeline system to carry Marcellus Shale gas to other cities. Crestwood Midstream and Mountaineer Keystone are looking into building a 42 mile, 16 inch gas gathering system. The pipeline would stretch through Preston, Tucker and Barbour Counties. The pipeline would connect with Columbia Gas Transmissions line in RandolphCounty. The line should be completed by December 2012.

The City of Elkinsis currently looking for a new CityClerk to replace Phil Graziani. Earlier this year Graziani announced to City Council that he would be retiring. Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree with 5 to 6 years experience and must be bonded for no less then $15,000 and must be a resident of Elkins. Currently, City Manager Bob Pingley is the acting City Clerk.

Shiflett was taken to Davis Memorial Hospital and treated for minor injuries. According to the State Police, Shiflett will be cited.

A pedestrian was hit by a vehicle near Beverly this morning. The State Police along with emergency crews were called out to the scene around 6:30am. There are no details on the condition of the individual who was hit or the drive of the car.
Bullying is an issue nationwide and with recent events in Upshur and Barbour Counties, it’s hitting a little closer home. A new program has been set up in the Philippi area called Project Eston and Eston’s Promise. The programs are in honor of Eston William Nelson the second who recently passed away. These programs on bullying will focus on instructing kids to stand up and say something should they ever be confronted. The first scheduled meeting will take place this Saturday at the City Building in Philippi. A cake walk and silent auction will be held from 5 until 7 pm. A dance for teens will follow from 8 until 10pm. The entry fee will be $5.
All folks 65 and older in our state can now buy a lifetime hunting and fishing license. Our State Division of Natural Resources says they will start going on sale later this week for $25. Starting next year, folks will have to buy the one time license when they turn 65 in order to hunt and fish. Anyone who turns 65 before January 1 won't have to have the license. The department says this move will allow it to qualify for federal money based on the number of licensed hunters in the state.
With the State Legislature passing a recent Marcellus shale bill, those in the industry are looking to get the drilling started. The West Virginia Wood Technology Center of Elkins along with Pierpont Community and Technical College of Fairmont will be providing oil and gas training to local community members. State Police have arrested a Jane Lew man on sexual assault charges. Taken into custody was 67 year old Jimmy Williams of Jane Lew, he is charged with 3 counts of sexual assault in the first degree and three counts of the use of obscene material to seduce a minor. One of the individuals was an 8 year old boy and the other an 20 year old mentally handicapped man.
The city of Kingwood recently received a grant in the amount of $60,000 for the purposes of recycling. A grapple bucket and a newspaper baler were purchased. The grant was through the Recycling assistance Grant Program. The city has been picking up recyclables twice a month. Their recycle station is located just outside of the municipal building.
Operation Christmas Child, where participants fill empty shoe boxes with items for kids suffering from natural disaster, war, terrorism, famine and poverty will soon be delivering those boxes to 8.5 million kids around the world. Those in North Central West Virginia have been doing there part to contribute. The Elkins area will be sending just over 14, 800 shoe boxes to kids in over 100 countries. Operation Christmas Child has been in operation since 1993.
Seven individuals have recently applied for the vacant Randolph County Prosecutor’s position including former prosecuting attorneys Frank P. Bush, Jr. and Earl W. Maxwell. The Barbour County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the beating of a teenage girl. The incident took place in Belington Monday around 5 pm. Three juveniles allegedly beat a 14 year old girl. She was taken to Davis Memorial Hospital and flown on to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. The case has been referred to the prosecutor’s office for possible criminal charges.
A PrestonCountyman is currently behind bars at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on assault charges. Richard Holder of Terra Alta and another man got into a fight outside of a bar. Holder pulled a pocket knife and stabbed the other man. Holder has been charged with unlawful assault.

The Weston City Police arrested a man in connection with a robbery. 18 year old Christopher Lee Bills was charged with first degree armed robbery. Bills had robbed a 7-11 on North Main Streetin Weston on November 27th. Bills had taken an undisclosed amount of money and cigarettes. Assisting Weston were members of the Lewis County Sheriffs’ Department, the WV State Police and the ATF.
One man was arrested following a stand off in Taylor County Sunday. Law enforcement was attempting to serve a man with court papers after he failed to appear in court. The man had locked himself in a room and refused to come out. After three hours, the man then gave up his gun and came out. His identity was not available at the time of this report. The Taylor county Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.

The 2011 buck harvest was 38 percent higher than the 2010 harvest which yielded 43,461. Preston County lead the state with 2,162, while Randolph County was second with 2,039 and Upshur County was ninth with 1,596. State Police have identified the man who was fatally injured in a two vehicle accident near Montrose Wednesday afternoon. 61 year old Mark William Eaton was pronounced dead on the scene. According to the authorities, Eaton had gone left of center and was struck by a tractor – trailer traveling north. Both the pick-up and the tractor trailer ran into a house. A woman that was inside of the house was injured and treated at the Davis Memorial Hospital.
Not guilty was the verdict brought back by a Barbour County Jury in the trial of a school bus driver. 42 year old James Lawrence was accused of writing a threatening note and claimed to have found it on the bus he had been driving in February of this year. Lawrence had been charged with threats of terrorist acts and conveying false information concerning terrorist acts.
Upshur County Sheriffs’ deputies arrested a Buckhannon woman in connection with a recent arrest. Taken into custody was 45 year old Lisa Ann Parsons and charged with conspiracy in connection to the arrest of Kevin Kimble. Kimble was arrested earlier this week and charged with felony delivery of a controlled substance, morphine. Parsons is currently free on a $10,000 bond.

The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department needs your help in finding a teenage girl. 15 year old Breanna Kaubish is listed as 5’ 6” tall, brown hair and brown eyes. She has a nose ring and wears glasses. She was reported missing yesterday and is believed to be with a 16 year old boy from Lewis County. The December session of the Pocahontas County Grand Jury was held Tuesday with a total of 14 indictments handed down. Of those were 42 year old Charles Fogus, Jr. of Buckeye for first degree murder. Also indicted was 32 year old Larry A. Turner of Marlinton on 2 counts of first degree arson and 2 counts of felony conspiracy. 59 year old Randall Bibb was indicted on first degree sexual assault.
With snow in the area, the talk of skiing is in the air. With that, an area resort announced its official opening date. Canaan Valley Resort will open it’s doors on December 17th. The resort’s general manager David Bostic says that the Ski Resort will be celebrating it’s 40th year.
A downed tree was responsible for 1,755 Randolph County residents being without power for two hours this morning. According to Mon Power Officials the downed tree occurred in the Montrose area cutting off electricity to Kerens, Gilman and northern parts of Elkins. Power was back on by 11 o’ clock.

A fire broke out at a trailer on the Claypool Road near Hodgesville Monday morning around 8 o’ clock. Fire crews had the blaze under control within an hour. No one was injured. The trailer was ruled a total loss. The fire was not considered suspicious. The Warren Fire Department is handling the investigation.
A man has been taken into custody for discharging a firearm in a trailer park. November 27, 21 year old Terrance Joel Daniels of Mill Creek allegedly fired off a rifle in the Burgess trailer park near Beverly. Daniels claimed that someone tried to break into his house. He has been charged with 2 counts of wanton endangerment, 2 counts of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, and 2 counts of shooting across a public road. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Jail on a $35,000 bond.
Also taken into custody by Randolph Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Beverly man on domestic violence charges. 28 year old Donald Lee Taylor had reportedly abused his girlfriend. Taylor was also charged with destruction of property in the amount of $6,600. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $10,000 bond.

An ATV accident took place Sunday on the Mount Nebo Roadin Upshur County. Fire Crews from Ellamore and Buckhannon Reported to the scene. There are reports of injuries but no further details. The Upshur County Sheriff’s department is handling the investigation.
The Upshur County Office Emergency Management has moved into its new home. Their new center is now located on 181 Pallottine Drive and will occupy one-half of the newly constructed building that will also hold the 911 center.
Beginning today the Dept. of Highways will be replacing the Crystal Springs Bridge on WV 92 between Aggregates and Elkins. Traffic will be detoured along County Route 11 and County Route14 through Crystal Springs. The public is encouraged to use the Elkins Exit off of Corridor-H to bypass the construction.
One man is dead as the result from injuries sustained from an ATV accident Sunday night. 38 year old John Brady was traveling on the Mount Nebo Roadwhen his ATV dropped off the side of the road, he lost control of the ATV and was ejected.
One is injured following an early morning accident near Elkins. A car was pulling out of the Seneca Road onto Route 33 east when a dump truck struck the vehicle. The unidentified individual was taken to Davis Memorial Hospital where their condition is unknown. The State Police is handling the investigation.
Fire broke out at a vacant two story structure early Friday morning in Hambleton. Fire crews from Parsons, Thomas and Leading Creek where called out around 3:30am. The blaze was contained within an hour. Cause has not been determined. The State Fire Marshall’s Office has been called into investigate.

A Buckhannon man faces sexual abuse charges. 21 year old Andrew Lee Williams is charged with four counts of sexual assault in the third degree. According to authorities, Williams had sex with a fifteen year old girl multiple times and has admitted as much. The girl’s guardian had reported that she had run away which led authorities to Williams. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
A tractor trailer had traffic backed up for several hours following an accident on Route 50 in Taylor County. The rig was carrying a compressor when the tractor trailer swerved over the side of the road and got stuck a ditch. No one was injured in the accident. The Taylor County Sheriffs’ Department is handling the investigation.
The first of its kind center has opened in Elkins. The expression of Colors Autism Resource Center officially opened its doors in a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday. The center will help to better educate and assist those affected by Autism as well as there families. The Center is located at 320 Randolph Avenue in Elkins.
The Barbour County Prosecuting Attorney announced that the trial of defendant James D. Lawrence will get underway at 9 amMonday. The trial is expected to last all week. Lawrencewas charged with one count of threats of terrorist acts and one count of conveying false information of terrorist acts related to a note found on a school bus in February of this year. The Elkins woman who had been reported missing has been found. 51 year old Pamela Hammer’s body was found close to her home on 11th Street around 4:30pm Wednesday. Cause of death has not been determined. The Elkins City Police is handling the investigation.
Two Buckhannon men and an Elkins man were sentenced in Federal Court on Tuesday. Billy George Leary, Jr. of Elkins was sentenced to four years in prison for the delivery and possession of a controlled substance, marijuana. James Robert Shaver of Buckhannon was sentenced to one year for illegal use of a telephone for the purposes of the distribution of methamphetamine, while Robert James Taylor of Buckhannon was sentenced to one year for the assault of a U. S. Federal Marshall.
Students from Buckhannon-Upshur High School raised money to help in the fight against breast cancer. A check for $2,600 was presented to Rebecca Newhouse of the Susan G. Komen Race for a Cure. The money was raised by a health class as part of a project to show the support to the Komen organization.
The Elkins High School Gear-up program has planned a special Military Night for Gear - Up students and parents. For Those students who dream of a college education and just can’t find a way financially, the military may be a very good option. Military night will be held this Monday, December 5th at Elkins High School at the cafeteria at 6 pm till 7:30pm.

Thanks to some tips, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department was able to solve a series of burglaries around the county. Taken into custody was 24 year old Joshua Finch and charged with burglary, breaking and entering and grand larceny. Finch is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $20,000 bond.
Upshur County Sheriffs’ Deputies arrested a Buckhannon man on drug related charges. 33 year old James W. Stulz has been charged with the delivery of a controlled substance, morphine. Just over 1,300 customers in Elkins experienced power outages in there homes over a four hour period Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. According to Mon Power spokesman Todd Meyers, a line located on a pole near the Tygart Valley Mall snapped. Crews from Mon Power had to cut power to other parts of Elkins to fix the problem.

Plans are in the works for a new hospital in PrestonCounty. CountyCommissionershave granted 30 acres to PrestonMemorialHospitalto build their new facility next the 911 center. Officials with Preston Memorial stated that a new facility would be cheaper in the long run than renovating the current building which is 56 years old. Construction will not start for another 3 to 5 years.
The Lewis County Sheriffs’ Department has expanded their reserve ranks by two. Austin Clark and Matthew Reed were the latest to be sworn as the two new reserve deputies in the department. Reserve deputies assist the department but, do not carry powers as law enforcement.

An Elkins teenager is recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg. The incident took place at a hunting camp located on the Shavers Fork in TuckerCountyon Friday morning. The boy was taken to Davis Memorial Hospital and then flown to Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. His condition is unknown at this time. The Tucker County Detachment of the WV State Police along with the Division of Natural Resources is handling the investigating.
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a shots fired call which took place Sunday morning at the Burgess Mobile Home Courtnear Beverly. The call came in around 11am. Sheriff’s Deputies stated that an individual had fired a rifle at someone and then ran off into the woods. Parts of U. S. Route 219 and 250 were shut down between Beverly and Dailey for close to an hour. Police have recovered what is believed to be the weapon involved. Weston City Police are looking for a man who robbed a local convenience store Sunday night. The hold-up took place around 9 o’ clock at the 7-11 located on North Main Street. A new company has taken over the operations of the Coastal Lumber Company in Dailey in Southern Randolph County. Eastern Hardwoods of Pennsylvania took over last month and within the last three weeks has added around 60 employees to their operation. Most are former employees of Coastal Lumber. The company is exclusively hiring former Coastal employees and plans to rehire more of them when possible.
The Upshur County Commission held their regular meeting Thursday with one of the topics of discussion a swimming pool. The Olympic size county pool is 30 years old and for the last couple of years has had problems such as leaks. Recently the Parks and Recreation department asked if they could either repair the pool or replace it. The commission spoke of making repairs and would look into the possibility of replacing the pool stating that funds might be available.
The West Virginia State Police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint in Upshur County this evening starting at 8 pm and will last till 2 am Saturday morning. The checkpoint will be located on Route 1515 the Elkins Road between Westphelia and Vicksburg Road. All motorists who desire to avoid the checkpoint may do so by traveling an alternate route.
Fire crews were called to a house fire in Buckhannon early this morning. The blaze broke out on Park Avenue around 5 am. Crews had the fire out within a half an hour. Damage was minimal. The fire does not look suspicious in nature. Assisting Buckhannon were crews from the Warren and Washington Districts.

A 15 year old Ellamore Boy that had been reported missing has been found by family members. Eston Williams the second had been reported missing Wednesday morning. Reports were that he had left a note to his family and a pistol was also reported missing from the residence. The search for the teenager resulted in a lockdown of Buckhannon-Upshur High School earlier that day. Family members reported later that day that they had found Eston. There were no further details.
Securities systems at the Randolph County Courthouse will be getting an upgrade. Commission President Mike Taylor announced that the commission would be receiving funds from the Courthouse Security Improvement grant. Past grants for the courthouse resulted in the x-ray equipment and other types of monitors that are located throughout the courthouse.
The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service along with the Conservation Fund recently announced the addition of 325 acres to the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The acquisition completes a multi-phase effort to protect one of the largest undeveloped areas of land within the refuge boundary.
A woman is in the hospital following a hit and run. The man identified as Sean Carpenter was driving his pick-up truck when he hit a car at the intersection of Camden Avenueand Marion Streetand fled the area. State Police spotted Carpenter on Route 20 and arrested him. The woman in the car, Carolyn Zickafoose-Tinney was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital where he condition is unknown. Buckhannon City Police have charged Carpenter with hit and run resulting in injury and failure to yield while the State Police have charged him with DUI.
Philippi Police along with the W.V.StatePolice are investigating a threat made by a Philip-Barbour High School Student over a social network site. Authorities investigated the matter this morning without incident and the investigation is ongoing.

State Police discover that a man who had arrested is a fugitive from justice. 27 year old Jose Bonilla is wanted in Puerto Rico on weapons charges. Bonilla was arrested by State Police Sunday afternoon after a high speed through downtown Elkins that ended in his capture. He is currently being charged with fleeing and obstruction and is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $50,000 bond and is awaiting extradition.
Tuesday the Region 7 Planning Commission held a workshop in Upshur County. Director Jo Vaughn spoke with several officials in the county of the importance of having proper magisterial, delegate and senatorial districts. The workshop is to help better educate officials so that voters don’t contest in future elections due to any misunderstandings.
A redistricting plan was approved by the Randolph County Commission Tuesday. 6 of the 27 precincts will be changed for the upcoming elections. Many of those adjustments concerned those people that live on or near the Georgetown Road. The purpose of those changes was for voter convenience and for governmental requirements. Those that are affected by the changes will be notified.
State Police and the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department were called to the Buckhannon-Upshur High School this morning around 6:15am to locate an individual. The 15 year old juvenile had left writings to friends and parents and a pistol was reported missing from the residence. The school was put on lockdown while authorities attempted to locate the juvenile. The school returned to normal activity. It is reported that the juvenile is from the Ellamore area. Reed had been pulling a trailer in which a rotor flew off of the back hitting a car’s windshield, killing Mrs. Martha Rose. Rose was pronounced dead on the scene.

The third annual West Virginia Transportation Conference was held Monday in Charleston. One of the main topics of discussion was Corridor-H. Officials in Charleston announced a campaign that has been launched to emphasize the importance of the completion of this highway. Progress maps and videos have been made readily available and Facebook page has also been set up. Corridor -H is expected to be 75% complete by 2013.
At Monday Night’s Barbour County Board of Education meeting the board voted unanimously to apply for state funds to help fight the dropout rate in the county. According to Superintendent of Schools Joe Super, “We have to do something different as the dropout rate is not improving. If approved by the state, it would help implement a new way of learning at Philip-Barbour High School starting next year.
Officials at the Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce will be continuing the Building Blocks for Business and workshop series this evening at the Randolph County Development Authority office on 10th Streetin Elkins. Fire crews from Flatwoods, Sutton, Burnsville and Walkersville were called out to the Pleasant Hills Road in Braxton County around 6 pm. It took close to four hours before the fire was finally brought under control. Between 4 and 5 acres were scorched. The U. S. Forest Service has been called in to investigate.

A Randolph County man was arrested over the weekend following a 2 mile chase. According to Authorities, they attempted to pull over Jose Bonilla on 11th Street in Elkins. Bonilla then took off from them for approximately 2 miles before he crashed the car. He then took off on foot in the woods before he was finally caught. Bonilla faces 12 different charges including fleeing, obstruction and failure to stop a vehicle at eight different stop signs. State Police are handling the investigation.
The Preston County Sheriff’s Department has added a new four-legged deputy to the force. A german shepherd named “Blek” came to the department two weeks ago from the country of Holland. “Blek” is trained in German for patrol and for narcotics. The new K-9 has already helped track down a burglar and has been used in the search for 4 year old Aliyah Lunsford in LewisCounty.
Teachers and staff of one Lewis County school combined their efforts on Sunday to raise money to help one of their own. The staff of Robert L. Bland Elementary held a steak dinner to benefit Rex and Debbie Helmick who were seriously injured in a motorcycle accident in September. The Helmicks have been in the hospital since the accident and are not expected to be released till December. Monies raised will go towards Hospital expenses. Both Rex and Debbie work at the Elementary school.
Fire crews from Walkersville and the Banks District were called to a structure fire Sunday night in southern Lewis County. By the time fire crews arrived the building was fully engulfed. No one was injured. The building was deemed a total loss. Cause has not been determined.

Taken into custody was 23 year old Daniel Strawder of Buckhannon. He was charged with 1 count of breaking and entering and 1 count of grand larceny. West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller has announced that he has helped secure funds for a state highway along with science education and transportation. Approved by the Senate was $460 million in Federal Funds for the Appalachian Development Highway Systems. $33 million dollars of that will go towards Corridor - H. Rockefeller stated that with the completion of the highway will come new growth to the MountainState.
A new truck has been donated to the BarbourCountySeniorCenterfor the Meals on Wheels program. The Wal-Mart Foundation and the Meals on Wheels Association of America teamed up to donate $20,000 to purchase the new Hot/Cold truck for the Meals on Wheels program in Barbour County. The remainder of the funds was raised by the community. This will allow more meals to be delivered to more rural areas of the county.
The Boil water advisory issued Thursday afternoon has been lifted for parts of downtown Elkins. Locations included Henry Avenuefrom Third Streetto Randolph Avenue, And Park Avenue to Elm Street. This advisory ended at about 2pmthis afternoon.
After 110 years of service to the community, the Cass Post Office closed. This was part of the cutbacks of the U. S. Postal Service. The Cass Post Office opened its doors back in 1901 and has had 12 postmasters oversee the mail. Buckeye is another post office they are considering closing.

The November term of the Lewis County Grand Jury convened on Monday in Weston with Judge Thomas Keadle presiding. A total of 27 indictments were returned. Of those were 37 year old Gary Allen Wiant on Second degree murder and 23 year old Christopher Thomas Sheppard on first degree murder.
A new police officer will be taking to the streets of Elkins. Patrolman Justin Sigley graduated from the W.V. State Police Academy Friday. Sigley hails from St. George and is looking forward to working with the department and meeting the people. With the new addition this brings the Elkins City Police Department up to nine full time officers. And two part time officers.
The Buckhannon city council has lifted the hiring freeze on the Buckhannon City Police Department. The council approved the hiring of a new officer. Interviews will be conducted November 15th. This will bring the Buckhannon City Police Department up to nine full time officers.

A woman is dead following an accident Sunday afternoon on Route 219 south of Elkins. A man and woman were traveling south in a van when a rotor from a near by car came off and flew through the windshield killing the woman. The condition of the man is unknown at this time. The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Buckhannon man on Domestic Violence charges. Taken into custody was 23 year old Joshua Tenney of Island Avenue. Tenney is currently free on bond.
Two men were arrested by Buckhannon City Police and charged with Robbery. 26 year old Jerry Scott of Buckhannon and 40 year old Michael Roquemore of Columbus, Ohio were taken into custody Sunday afternoon after they assaulted a man and took money from him earlier that day. They are currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail. Bond has not been set.
A LewisCountyman has been charged with the stabbing death of his wife. 61 year old Terry Messenger of Jane Lew has been charged with first degree murder of his wife Ida Messenger. Her body was found at a home located in Good Hope in Harrison County Thursday morning. Messenger had confessed to the crime following the arrest. It is rumored that his wife was planning to leave him.
The State High School Football Playoffs are set and three area teams are in. In Class Triple ‘A’ the 6th ranked Tigers of Elkins will host 11th ranked Hurricane this Saturday afternoon in Buckhannon with kick-off slated for 1:30. The 11th ranked Bearcats of Grafton travel to number 6 Wayne on Friday for a 7:30pm encounter.The Number 14 Warriors of Pocahontas County will travel to Point Pleasant to face the 3rd ranked White Falcons of Wahama Saturday evening at 7:30pm.

A newly established corporation is now operating the Coastal Lumber Company in Dailey in Randolph County. Eastern Hardwoods Incorporated is a primary lumber manufacturing facility with secondary processing capabilities providing raw materials to the flooring, millwork, furniture, cabinetry and hardwood distribution industries. Eastern has locations in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Virginia and North Carolina. Coastal Lumber Company recently closed down their operations over the summer.
Two Preston County men were charged with illegally killing a 10 point buck deer out of season. 39 year old Ernest Nice and 37 year old Bryan Sypolt, both of Terra Alta were charged with illegal possession of wild game, providing false information and hunting without a license. The men could see fines of close to $5,000 each as the deer was considered a trophy which would qualify under the enhanced penalties section of the hunting laws of WV.

Fire broke out around 10:30 at a home located on the Heston Road near Rock CaveThursday night. The flames were brought under control within an hour. Cause has not been determined. A Buckhannon man has been arrested for possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. Taken into custody was 63 year old James Hinkle. Over 200 packets of synthetic drugs, from two separate business locations in Randolph County were confiscated back in June. The drugs which go by the name of Demon and Grizzly, were a form of synthetic marijuana. The locations were Elkins and Norton.
A string of break-ins have been taking place in the Upshur County the past couple of weeks involving homes and businesses. According to the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department, the most recent break-ins have occurred at Martin Oil and the Country Time Restaurant. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department along with the WV State Police discovered a meth lab in the Jane Lew area. It was discovered in the woods near a creek just of the Sycamore Lick Road. Discovered is what appeared to be a still active meth lab with remnants still burning. The Lewis and Gilmer County school systems have presented the School Building Authority with a request for funding for a joint elementary school that would be built on the boarder between the two counties. The school would be located along route 33 between Weston and Glenville and would replace Alum Bridge in Lewis County and Troy in Gilmer County. SBA representative Mark Manchin believes that the project would be funded. The decision would be made within the next 30 to 60 days.
The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department has added another vehicle to its fleet. The new response vehicle holds around 11 people and will be used for delivering warrants on meth labs in Upshur and surrounding counties. Sheriff Virgil Miller stated that with the increase in meth in the area, this vehicle will be of great assistance to his department.
High School Football rankings are out. In Class Triple ‘A’ The Elkins High Tigers have moved up from number 8 to number 7. Class Double ‘A’, the Bearcats of Grafton pull into the number 8 spot. And in Class Single ‘A’, Pocahontas County is at number #12 with Tucker County at number #17. One more week of the regular season before the playoff pairings are determined.
29 year old Lena Lunsford of Weston was named in a six count indictment in Federal Court for using foods stamps for gain. Lunsford could face up to 6 years in prison plus fines. Lunsford is the Mother of the missing 3 year old girl, Aliyah Lunsford.
Armstrong World announced today the layoff of 116 of its employees at there Beverly Plant in RandolphCounty. The company noted the continuing poor market conditions as the reason. Their last day will be November the 11th.
Belington City Police arrested a man on Domestic Battery charges. 34 year old Manuel Robinson was taken into custody after his girlfriend reported to police that he had been hitting her. It was alleged that he had threatened police as well. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional jail on a $5,000 bond. Other charges may be forth coming.

The October term of the Randolph County Grand Jury met on Monday coming back with a total of 19 indictments. Of those indicted were John Michael Wilson, Jr. of Belington for first degree sexual assault, sexual abuse by a parent or guardian and sexual abuse in the first degree. Ricky Leroy Pritt of Valley Head was indicted for two counts of wanton endangerment with a firearm and obstruction of an officer. Regina Faye Helmick of Elkins was indicted for one count of embezzlement, one count of fraudulent schemes and one count of uttering.
Well the October numbers are in for the amount of snow accumulation with Snowshoe Mountain Ski resort ahead of everybody. The West Virginiaresort reported a total of 20 inches with a foot of it from the weekend snowstorm.
And speaking of Ski Resort openings, the West Virginia Ski Area Association announced the opening dates for the area Ski Resorts. Snowshoe Mountain Nov. 23 - Timberline Resort Dec. 8 - Winterplace Dec. 9 - Canaan Valley Dec. 10 - Olgebay Resort Dec. 15. Other area resorts include Wisp Resort in MarylandDec. 15 and Seven Springs in Pa. Nov. 24.
A total of nine individuals were sentenced before a Federal Court today. Of those was 32 year old Matthew Ryan Lamm of Weston. Lamm was sentenced to an extra two years in prison for testing positive for drugs on two occasions and failure to inform a probation officer of being arrested. Lamm was originally sentenced to 30 months plus six years probation for distribution of crack cocaine.
A decision has been made concerning the financing of the LewisCountycourthouse annex. The Lewis County Building Commission will use a loan from the U. S. Department of Agriculture to complete the building. The cost of the project is projected at $6 million dollars. Construction will get underway in the Spring of 2012.

A late October snow storm wreaked havoc on parts of North Central West Virginia from Friday night into Saturday. According to Todd Meyers, media director of Mon Power, close to 13,000 customers from Elkins and Clarksburg all the way to Martinsburg were without power, with 1,600 customers in north central West Virginia affected.
While some praise the new Wind Turbines along the Laurel Mountain Ridge tops others are claiming that it is doing harm to the bird population. Experts are claiming that close to 500 song birds have been killed due to the wind turbines. Others claim that when the birds get to close, they tend to get disoriented. Laurel Mountain Wind Turbines recently opened to tours in the area. The Wind Farm looks to generate jobs and money to the area
40 year old Jeffery Wayne Hall has been charged with three counts of child pornography. State Troopers have charges against the WebsterCountyman which involve three different children. More charges could be pending. He is currently being held in the Central Regional Jail on a $75,000 bond.
A Beverly Resident enters a plea to marijuana conspiracy charges. 31 year old Gregory Stephen Scott entered a plea of guilty to one count of an indictment charging him with conspiracy to distribute marijuana in the fall of 2010. He could face five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
Preston County Sheriffs’ deputies are investigating the vandalism of the High school Football field. The incident took place late Friday as someone had done donuts on the football field and damaged one of the goal posts. A pad from one of the blocking dummies was also taken but later recovered. Ribbon cutting ceremonies were held Thursday for the Laurel Mountain Wind Facility which stretches from Randolph County into Barbour County. The facility combines energy storage and wind generation in one location. The wind farm runs across a 12 mile range of Laurel Mountain ridge tops which includes 61 turbines. 17 of those turbines in Randolph County and 44 in Barbour. The industry promises to generate jobs and revenue for both counties.
The Occupy Wall Street movement is making its way to the small communities around the Country. One of those communities is Elkins. A gathering has been planned for tonight at the Federal Building in Downtown Elkins. One of the coordinators, Michael Davis, stated it that the message is to stop the cooperate take over of the country. Davis says that they see themselves in the tradition of the founders of this country who wanted to shake off a foreign occupation. The gathering is scheduled for 5:30pm this evening.

The Randolph County Commission has appointed an attorney to investigate the prosecutor’s office. Jim Lees of the Charleston Law firm of Hunt and Lees will be handling the investigation. According to Commission President Mike Taylor, they hope to have the investigation complete by December 5th. No mention of why the prosecutor’s office is being investigated only to say that it was a personal matter.
As some motorists fail to stop when a school bus stops, Upshur County has installed cameras on the school buses for the purposes of safety. County officials are hoping this will discourage those who do not stop or might go around a school bus while it’s stopped. Law enforcement reminds those that ignore the law, they can have their driver’s license taken away.
A greenhouse is in the future for Tucker County High School. A National Forestry grant of $91,000 plus a $25,000 grant thanks to Senator Walt Helmick will make it happen. The structure will be adjoined to the high school and used for students to conduct research. Completion is scheduled for the spring of 2012
Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital will be getting a little bit of a face lift. Recent inspections indicated that sidewalks and railing around the hospital campus need replacement. Officials discovered cracks in the sidewalks and rusted railing during a recent inspection of the grounds.
Mon Power will disrupt electric service in the Southern part of Randolph County this Saturday from 9 am till 2 pm. They will be performing emergency repairs on the transmission line that feeds the Tygart Station. The outage will affect Valley Bend, Mill Creek and Huttonsville, also parts of Elk Water, Shavers Fork, and the Adolph Road.

A special attorney has been appointed by the Randolph County Commission to investigate the County Prosecutor’s office. The commission would not say what it was concerning. The Commission agenda listed it as a personal matter. According to the West Virginia Disciplinary Counsel, there are already three other pending complaints against the Randolph County Prosecutor’s Office.
Violations have been discovered by the U.S. Department of Labor against the Huddle House Restaurants in three states. According to the Labor Department some employees did not receive at least minimum wage for hours that they’ve worked and some did not receive overtime pay at the exact rate. This included the Huddle House in Buckhannon. States affected were Georgia, Missouri and West Virginia. Huddle House agreed to pay back wages plus penalties.
The town of Mill Creek has received two grants to help pay for improvements. The two grants totaling $40,000 will be used for water system upgrades and continued work on the town's community building. This will also include buying kitchen and restroom equipment for the Robert E.Maxwell Community Building in Hamill Park.
Fire crews from Buckhannon, Washington and Warren Districts were called out to a fire at local lumber company. The call came out around 4am at the West Virginia Split Rail Company in Buckhannon. The fire was contained within a half an hour. The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature. No one was injured.

The October Term of the Barbour County Grand Jury was held on Monday with a total of 19 indictments returned. Of those to be indicted was a Barbour County teacher. Sarah Ann Rutherford was indicted on one count of sexual abuse by a guardian or custodian and 3 counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Also indicted was Diana Elaine Hancox on fourth degree arson. In a related story, Barbour County Prosecuting Attorney Leckta L. Poling said that the defendant Charles Thomas Runner, currently being held at the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on first degree murder charges, will appear in court Wednesday for a bond hearing.
Upshur County Sheriff’s deputies arrested an Adrianman on firearms charges. Taken in to custody was 38 year old Charles E. Black, he was charged with illegal possession of firearms. Also taken into custody was 25 year old Katrece M Tinney of Buckhannon, charged with the delivery of a controlled substance.
Workforce West Virginia recently came out with its unemployment figures showing the State has dropped from 8% to 7.9%. Highest rate of unemployment in the state is WeztelCountyat 11.9% with the lowest being Mononghela County at 5.7%
The Elkins City Police are looking for suspects in the breaking and entering of Lynn’s used Cars early Monday morning. According to Chief Rob White, a white Ford pick up and keys for several vehicles were taken. The truck was eventually recovered not far from the break-in. A Fairmont woman led State Police on a car chase late Sunday morning on Route 33 in Randolph County. 22 year old Tabitha Marie Watson is charged with fleeing and child neglect resulting in risk of injury. State police attempted to pull over Watson who was traveling north at the time. When she pulled over between the Crystal Springs and Elkins exits, a two year old baby girl was found in the back seat. Watson is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail.
An agreement has finally been reached between the Upshur County Board of Education and Arch Coal concerning possible mining underneath Buckhannon-Upshur High School. Arch Coal agreed not to mine under the school with the Board of Education dropping their objection to the coal company’s permit application with the Department of Environmental Protection. The fight between both entities was over an 1800 acre coal mine that was going to be built under the High School.
The woman killed in Barbour County Thursday night has been identified. Beverly Anne Runner of Gallowaywas beaten by her ex-husband, 46 year old Thomas Charlie Runner with a baseball bat. Her body was taken to the medical examiner’s office in Charleston. Thomas Runner has been charged with first degree murder.
The Randolph County Commission will be holding the regular meeting tomorrow at the James Cain Courthouse Annex. Some of the items on the agenda are considering an appointment to the Region 7 Planning and Development Council. Mr. Michael Daugherty will be giving an update on the age and compensation study. Also the commission will consider a financial request from the KumpEducationCenter.The meeting is scheduled for 1:30pm.

A Barbour County man has confessed to the death of his ex-wife. Arrested was Thomas Charlie Runner of Galloway and charged with first degree murder. Barbour County Sheriff’s Deputies were called on Thursday to the residence in Galloway of a woman who was found dead on the floor of her home. Runner and the woman had been divorced for approximately one year. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail and will be arraigned this morning.
Fire crews from Adrian, Selbyville and the Banks District were called to a trailer fire on the Ellis Creek Road just off the Alexander Road Thursday afternoon. The flames were brought under control within the hour, the trailer was deemed a total loss. No one was home at the time of the fire.
Fire broke out Thursday afternoon at a house located on the East Bend Road in Mt. Liberty. According to Authorities the fire took place in the utility room of the house. The home was declared a total loss. Crews from Belington and Philippi were on the scene for several hours.
25 year old Cassandra Smith entered a plea of guilty to one count of knowingly making false, fraudulent and fictitious statements to agents of the ATF and the FBI February 16th of this year. A false statement which lead to the death of a U. S. Marshall Derek Hotsinpiller. Smith could be sentenced to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. She is currently free on bond awaiting sentencing.

U.S. Senators Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller, today announced nearly $3.15 million in funding for rural development projects from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that will extend electricity lines, help farmers increase their energy efficiency and assist local businesses expand across areas of West Virginia. The Harrison Rural Electrification Association, Inc. will receive a loan of $3 million to make electrical service improvements across Barbour, Doddridge, Harrison, Marion, Taylor, Lewis and Upshur counties. The project will serve 640 consumers, build 39 miles of new electric distribution line and make improvements to 18 miles of existing distribution line.
According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department, a man who was found dead Tuesday afternoon had reportedly died of a medical condition. 68 year old John R. Parsons was attempting to free the lime spreader of a clog and had died in the process. The incident took place on the lower Cheat Road on the Armentrout Farm.
A plane made an emergency landing on a highway in Pocahontas County last night. According to the W.V. State Police the pilot had been experiencing mechanical problems and set his plane down on Route 150 near the Cranberry Wilderness area. The plane clipped a road sign but, no one was injured. The NTSB and the FAA have been called into investigate.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man on multiple charges late Saturday night. 45 year old Ricky Leroy Pritt was charged with two counts of malicious wounding of an officer and two counts of obstruction. At the time of the arrest, Pritt was being served with a protective order at his Valley Head Home. Pritt had a pistol that was taken from him at the time.
A Pennsylvania man was seriously injured from a fall late Monday night in Buckhannon. The 44 year old contractor had stepped to far back on the platform on which he was working and fell 40 feet while working at Weyerhauser located on Hall Road. He was flown to Ruby Memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown. According to authorities the plant was shutdown for maintenance when the fall happened.
The woman in Saturday night’s fire has been identified as 35 year old Tracy Ware. Ware was found unconscious inside of a house located on Main Street in Beverly. She was flown to the West Penn Burn Center in Pittsburgh. The State Fire Marshall’s Office along with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.
Two were injured in a two car collision early this morning on Route 33 near the Norton intersection. Ethan Gassnola was pulling out of the intersection when he hit a truck driven by Edward Mayle of Moatsville. A passenger in the Mayle truck, Joey Marsh and Gassnola were both taken to the Davis Memorial Hospital where their conditions are currently unknown. State Police cited Gassnola for failure to yield the right of way.

Fire crews from Beverly and Elkins were called out to a fire at a two – storey structure located on Main Street in Beverly late Saturday night. When fire crews arrived the home was fully engulfed. The blaze was brought under control within a half an hour. A woman was found inside unconscious and suffering burns and smoke inhalation. She was flown to the West Penn Burn Center in Pittsburgh. Her condition is unknown. One fireman was treated on the scene for minor burns. Cause is not known and is under the investigation of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department and the W. V. State Fire Marshall’s Office.
The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department arrested a fugitive from justice. Taken into custody was 35 year old Nathan McCarty. McCarty was spotted in the Mabie area Thursday night. McCarty is wanted in Blair County, Pennsylvania on charges of criminal assault and probation violations. McCarty is also charged with fleeing from a police officer by the Randolph County sheriff’s Department. He awaits extradition.
The Buckhannon Fire Department is holding their first prize bash this Saturday. They will be raffling off guns, bows, power tools and electronics. The event will be held inside of the fire department. Funds raised will go toward the Buckhannon Fire Department.
James C. Hunt will be the keynote speaker on Wednesday, October 19, at the graduation festivities of the second annual Buckhannon-Upshur Citizen’s Governmental Affairs Academy. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. in the Benedum Campus Center Social Hall. Hunt is a seven-term councilman and former Mayor of Clarksburg. He has also served in a variety of local, state and national leadership positions, such as President of the National League of Cities and the West Virginia Municipal League.

The U. S. Postal Service held a meeting Thursday night at Galloway to allow the residents to express their views on the possible closure of the Post Office. Concerns of the distance to travel to pick up the mail at a new location, to possible lost mail as the result of the new location. Other residents expressed the fact that it is a gathering spot for those to socialize. The Postal Service is looking to close 3,700 post offices around the country with 117 of them in West Virginia.

A Randolph County woman entered a guilty plea in Federal Court Tuesday. 40 year old Angela A. Gould of Valley Head plead guilty to one count of embezzlement in Randolph County. Gould embezzled close to $1,000 in U. S. currency each of the years 2009 and 2010 and made just over $59,000 in unauthorized charges to the victim’s two credit cards. Gould is free on bond pending sentencing and faces a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Taylor County has been plagued with a rash of break-ins. According to the Sheriff’s Department, several vehicles and out buildings were broken into in the Corbin Branch area with various items taken. Randolph County was named one of the top 100 communities for young people Wednesday. Randolph was the only place named in West Virginia and only the third county in the state to receive such an award. The ceremony to present the honor took place Wednesday afternoon.
An elderly man is dead as the result of a single vehicle accident this morning on Rich Mountain located on Route 33 east of Elkins. According to two eyewitnesses, the man veered left of center hitting a couple of rocks lodged in the side of the hill. He was pronounced dead on the scene. Upshur county Sheriff’s Deputies executed multiple traffic stops on Route 33. Upon investigation it was discovered that one of the occupants 58 year old Andrew Mitchell of Mobile Alabama, was wanted by Virginia authorities on probation violations for unlawful wounding charges and was charged with being a fugitive from justice. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement is also looking for 25 year old Juan Martinez Santos with the Town house Motel, Clarksburg as his address. He is 6 foot, 152 pounds driving a 2008 Black Dodge pick-up truck with Alabamalicense.

The City of Buckhannon is looking to raise rates on parking permits in the downtown district. Fees have not been changed since 1997 and the Public Works Department would like to raise rates by $10 for the city’s six lots. Extra monies raised would go towards upgrade and care to the current parking lots along with the parks and cemeteries. The first reading of the ordinance passed Thursday with the second reading on Friday. Should the ordinance pass, the new rate would go into effect November 13th.
Mon Power has scheduled a service interruption that will affect Northern Pocahontas County. The interruption will take place this Saturday, October 15th, and will run from 8:30 amtill 1:30pm. The interruption is for maintenance work on the Frank Substation. The outage will affect approximately 1,200 customers. Communities affected will be Durbin, Frank, Bartow, Arborvale and Thornwood.

Another donation was recently made to the Davis House. The Randolph County Commission announced that it would donate $15,000 to the project. Commissioners expressed how having families close by is a benefit to those going though cancer treatments.

With last Tuesday’s defeat of the Barbour County Fire Fee, some departments are checking out other avenues to help fund their fire departments. Belington is one of those. Monday night saw the Belington Ordinance Committee hold a meeting with the members of the department to discuss a fire fee increase in the city. The increase would go from the current $2 to $4 or $5. The Ordinance Committee requested the department to show need. The issue has been placed on the next City Council agenda for discussion.
Approximately two weeks ago the pavement on North Avenuein Weston caved in detouring traffic. City officials are hoping with some changes it will help keep another cave-in from happening. One is the replacement of sewage lines at that location that feed into the WestForkRiver.
Good news for parents whose kids attend Alderson-BroaddusCollege. With the economy at a low, the college will be putting a freeze on any increases to its tuition. The policy will take effect this year and run through 2014. With the move, administrators hope this will encourage others to attend Alderson-Broaddus.
One person was injured as the result of a two car collision on Route 219 North between Elkins and Kerens. An SUV and car collided around 7 this morning. One was taken to DavisMemorialHospitaland treated for injuries. Names were not released. The investigation is being handled by the WV State Police.
A tractor trailer rolled this morning around 10amon I-79 near mile marker 86 in LewisCounty. The rig swerved to avoid a pick-up truck that got too close when passing and hitting a bank and flipping it on it’s side. The driver was taken to Stonewall Jackson memorial Hospital where his condition is unknown. The Lewis County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.
FormerStateHouse of Representatives and State Senator Mike Ross helped launch a community campaign with a $50,000 gift to Davis Health System Foundation’s Davis House project. The house will provide a home away from home for cancer patients. Special Projects Coordinator, Dan Bucher expressed his appreciation to Mr. Ross and said the Davis House is a little closer to becoming a reality.

Fires crews from around southern Randolph County were called to a blaze at a two story structure located on Conrad Street in Mill Creek. The fire was contained within a half an hour. According to authorities, it is believed to have started in a bedroom on the second floor. The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature. No one was at home at the time of the fire.
A special meeting was held by the Pocahontas county commission in regards to the position of county coordinator. Coordinator Jay Miller resigned from his two year position, which paid him one dollar a year. Miller had volunteered to take the job with his term ending on October 20th. Miller was instrumental in bringing the One Room University which brought community college classes to the Marlinton area. The commission will be looking to fill that position.
Topping off the week of events was the Mountain State Forest Festival’s Grand Feature parade in which thousands lined the streets to take in the two hour event. Director General Scott Harris called the week of events a success and welcomes all back to next year’s festival.
With last Tuesday’s fire levy voted down in Barbour County fire departments will still continue to plug away in raising funds to try and keep their respective fire departments going. The Philippi Fire Department will be doing just that as they hold a gun raffle through the month of November. The plane reported missing over Hardy County has been located. According to the Civil Air Patrol, the plane was spotted in a mountainous area of HardyCountynear the community of Peru just south of Moorefield. Three people aboard the plane en-route to Johnstown, Pennsylvania from Danville, Virginia were killed in the crash.
Remember the precipitation that Snowshoe Mountain Ski resort picked up last weekend? The data is in. According to the National Weather Service nine inches fell over the weekend on the resort and surrounding areas. One inch Friday with four inches to fall on Saturday and Sunday.
Grand Jury was held Thursday in TuckerCountywith three indictments returned. Brian Schoonover was indicted on grand larceny, breaking and entering, entering without breaking a concealing stolen property along with two counts of concealing stolen items from Molland and items from the Backbone Mountain Wind power station. Also indicted was April Chaney on two felony counts of breaking and entering and entering without breaking of the Backbone Mountain wind Power station. Indicted was Scott Kinsel on two counts of wounding and wanton and endangerment with a firearm.
The boil water advisory has been lifted in the Weston area. West Virginia American Water implemented the advisory when a main water line broke Tuesday afternoon between Main Street and First Street. American went on to say that the water has been tested and meets water quality standards.
The Mountain State Forest Festival comes to a climax today with the Queen’s coronation this afternoon, the Firemen’s Parade tonight. The Grand Feature parade tops off the festival Saturday at 1 pm.

The driver involved in a two vehicle accident could be charged. An Elkins man, Michael Phillips, died Tuesday morning as the result of his injuries in an accident that took place on Route 219 south of Elkins. According to Elkins City Police the driver of the vehicle, Aaron Kittle was at fault and could face criminal charges for his negligence.
Those that are being treated for cancer and their families will soon have a place to stay while being treated at Davis Memorial Hospital. The Davis House will offer temporary housing for patients and their families. More then $275,000 of the $500,000 has been raised for the renovation of the house located on Worth Avenuejust across from the Hospital. Renovation of the structure will begin next year.
Elkins City Police arrested a man for paying a bond fine with counterfeit money. Police say Kenneth W. Hatfield handed them $200 on a bail to help a friend. Upon further examination, police noticed that all of the bills had the same serial number. Hatfield is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $25,000.
Close to $13,000 in drugs was confiscated following a routine traffic stop Wednesday night. Buckhannon City Police arrested 38-year-old Winston Irons of Clarksburg and charged him with possession with intent to deliver and driving on a revoked license. While police stopped Irons they discovered close to 4 ounces of cocaine with a street value of $10,000 and 27 grams of marijuana totaling $300 and an undisclosed amount of cash. He is currently housed in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $51,000 bond.
The Honorary Marshall has been selected for the Forest Festival’s Grand Feature Parade this Saturday afternoon. One man is dead as the result of a single vehicle accident Tuesday morning. Michael Scott Phillips and another passenger were injured following a two vehicle accident at the intersection of Route 219 and the Chenoweth Creek Road south of Elkins. Both were taken to Davis Memorial Hospital were Phillips later died from his injuries. The condition of the other individual in the accident is not known. The Elkins City Police is handling the investigation.
A lot more then a Governor’s election was held on Tuesday as the residents of Barbour County voted on a fire fee for the county. The fire fee was voted down 2,394 to 1,428. Reports are that following the election, several firefighters are going to retire because the fire fee did not pass.
A boil water advisory has been issued to parts of Weston. WV American Water issued the advisory for parts of Center Street to First Street. According to American Water, a main water line break occurred Tuesday evening and crews are currently working on the line. A Whitmer man sustained injuries following a single vehicle accident early Tuesday morning. According to State Police, the accident took place on route 29 just past the Whitmer Fire Department around 1:30am. The man, whose name was not given, was air lifted to Ruby memorial Hospital where his condition is not known. The State Police is handling the investigation.
Authorities are looking for a plane they believe went down in the Hardy County area late Sunday night. The plane left Danville, Virginia heading to Johnstown, Pennsylvania when according to FAA officials, they lost contact over Hardy County. Over 100 people are scouring the area to search for the pilot, Charles Armitage, Jr. of Vandergrift, Pennsylvania, he is president of Uncle Charley’s Sausage Company.

Two men were seriously injured following a two vehicle accident which took place this afternoon around 10:30am near the intersection of Route 219 south and the Chenoweth Creek Road. A Jeep traveling North tried to pass an SUV on the berm throwing them off the road rolling the jeep several times. Both men were taken to the Davis Memorial Hospital. There names were not available at the time of this report. The Elkins City Police is handling the investigation.
U.S.Senators Joe Manchin and Jay Rockefeller and Representative Nick Rahall announced Monday that six cities in West Virginia will receive a total of $1.3 million dollars to hire, keep, and/or rehire law enforcement officers through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office. Of those cities to receive funding are the Belington City Police which will receive just over $124,574. This will assist in manpower and equipment.
Residents of Kerens and the surrounding area expressed there disapproval of the proposal to close the Kerens Post Office. Those expressed concerns of mail getting misplaced at the new locations to the distance to drive to pick up their mail. The Kerens Post office is one of 117 around the State of West Virginia to close.
Voting for the special election for the governor of the state of West Virginia is today. Recent Metronews polls have the race between Democratic Governor Earl Ray Tomblin and Republican challenger Bill Maloney a statistical dead heat with Tomblin at 47% and Maloney at 46%. Two individuals were arrested on felony perjury charges in Randolph County over the weekend. Taken into custody were 19-year-old Steven M. Meadows of Valley Head and 34-year-old Amanda Sendling of Beverly. Also arrested on the same charges was 35-year-old Gary L. Meadows of Belington. All three were charges with willfully providing false information in the trail of Wallis Sendling, Jr. for the Delivery of a controlled substance. Moore and Meadows are both in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $20,000 bond.
Fire crews were summoned to Rennie’s Trail Courton old route 33 near Buckhannon late Saturday Night. The main office of the trailer park had caught fire and was extinguished within a half hour. The fire is listed as suspicious. The State Fire Marshall’s Office has been called in to investigate.
The Randolph County Commission has named a new 911 director. James a Wise will take over the position replacing Vern Edinger who left the position for personal reasons. Wise brings his experience to the position, as he recently retired after 25 years as a WV State Trooper.

A tractor-trailer hauling lumber over-turned Friday on Route 39 south of Marlinton. A Taylor County woman was arraigned Thursday on embezzlement charges. Marli Jenkins is charged with embezzling thousands of dollars as well as falsifying accounts while director of the library. According to authorities close to $260,000 cannot be accounted for. Jenkins is currently out on a $50,000 bond.
State Police took an Elkins man into custody on forgery and uttering charges. 43-year- old David Friedline was charges with 11 counts of forgery and 11 counts of uttering. Friedline had been writing checks out to different places as well as to himself. He could face up to 10 years in prison. He is currently out on a $25,000 bond.

Blackwater Falls recently made the announcement of the opening of 13 new cabins to their state Park. The new cabins are located in the Pendleton Point Overlook area of the Park. This brings the total of cabins to 39. The cabins were built at a cost of $4.5 million dollars and came through the lottery funds.

A Lewis County magistrate has decided to send the case against Rusty Bragg to the Grand Jury. According to Authorities, 57-year-old Myron Bragg had sexually molested four boys from 1973 to the present. He has been charged with four counts of sexual abuse by a guardian. The Lewis County Grand Jury will meet next on November 7.
Thanks to a grant by the West Virginia Departments of Health and education along with donations by fundraisers, the George Ward Elementary School in Randolph County has a new playground. From climbing walls to slides, crazy ladders to a paved trail and fence. According to County officials the equipment they had was becoming old and unsafe.
U.S. Cellular has released its list of leading schools in its $1 million Calling All Communities Campaign and Buckhannon-Upshur High School is in the running. Recent voting has the school jumping 10 spots. The winner of the voting will receive $150,000 for their school. The next 17 will receive $50,000. Officials at U. S. Cellular say it is all about helping the communities. Voting at local stores ends on October 7th.
A Belington man was arrested by State police and charged with the sexual abuse of a child. 25-year-old John Wilson, Jr. has been charged with one count of the sexual abuse of a 5-year-old girl. Wilson could face up to up to 20 years in prison. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley regional Jail on a $100,000 bond.
A fire at a home near Newburg has been listed a suspicious. Fire crews were called out to the Miller Hill Road around 9:30 Wednesday night to a 2 story structure fire. Crews fought the blaze for close to two hours. The house was deemed a total loss. The State Fire Marshall’s office has been called into investigate.
First signs of winter may be rearing their head early. Forecasters say that with temperatures dropping around the state one of the first places that could see snow this weekend is Snowshoe Mountain in Pocahontas County. The National Weather Service is expecting overnight lows in the upper 20s and the possibility of one inch of snow. And for those looking forward to the ski season, opening day is scheduled for November 23rd.

The Barbour County Office of Emergency Management director was arraigned on Tuesday. Larry Allen plead not guilty to the seven charges of assault. According to Police, Allen was conducting a drill on September 2nd and entered the Philippi Elementary School wearing a mask and had fired a .22 caliber starter pistol several times at the school staff. Allen has been placed on Administrative leave.
BarbourCountyvoters will decide this Tuesday whether the county should be accessed a fire fee to help support the county fire departments. Should the levy pass, monies would come through property taxes. The money would bring in approximately $250,000 to be split amount the fire stations in BarbourCounty.
"Introducing Myself" a new exhibition in Sleeth Gallery opens Tuesday, September 27 and runs through October 20. It is an exciting show featuring the imaginative process of one artist, Andy Bloxham, West Virginia Wesleyan's newest Art Department faculty. One man is seriously injured following an ATV accident Tuesday evening near Valley Head. 26-year-old Jeffery L. Stanton was traveling on the Simmons Run Road at a high rate of speed when he applied the brakes on his ATV to avoid a pick-up truck. He was then thrown over the handle bars on to the ground. He was air lifted to Ruby memorial Hospital with head injuries. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation.
Two Davismen were arrested on drug related charges Sunday night in Keyser. 18-year-old Brandyn L. Hamrick and 18-year-old Brian C. Quattro, both students at Potomac State College were charged with possession with intent to distribute. Found in the car were 24 grams of marijuana and paraphernalia.

A missing Maryland woman is found. Christine Toll of Takoma Park, Marylandand her boyfriend Deon Moore had been hiking in the Dolly Sods area of Tucker County on Friday, when they become separated. Moore had found his way back to camp, but Toll had not. Ms. Toll was finally located around 11:30 amMonday and according to State Police, in good health.
Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a Buckhannon man on burglary charges. 20-year-old Codey Foster of the Vegan Roadwas taken into custody and charged with petit larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny and conspiracy to commit burglary.
The Randolph County Commission will hold a special meeting on Friday, September 30 at the James Cain Courthouse annex at 10:00am. The meeting will focus on the hiring of a new 911 director and consider approval of a sign grant for the Office of emergency management.
Members of the Weston Fire Department responded to a 3 alarm fire at the Creative Candle Shop located old route 33 near Weston, late Monday afternoon. The flames were brought under control within the hour. Cause has not been determined but, is believed to be accidental. Assisting Weston were members of the Jackson’s Mill, Jane Lew and Buckhannon Fire Departments.
A Montrose man was arrested and charged with felony sexual assault. 63-year-old Ed Slaubaugh faces three counts of sexual abuse of a 4-year-old girl. The incident occurred this month. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Fire companies from around TaylorCountywere called out to a structure fire Saturday evening around 9 o’clock. A garage attached to a house located on the Wilson Roadjust outside of Thorntoncaught fire and was contained within the hour. Cause has not been determined. No one was home at the time of the blaze.
Emergency crews in LewisCountyare looking for a 3-year-old girl. Law enforcement and rescue crews spend more the 12 hours Sunday searching the area for Aliayah Lunsford. She was reported missing around 11:30amSunday morning from her home located in South Weston. Dive teams have also been called in to search the WestForkRiver. Aliyah is around 3 feet tall and weighs around 30 pounds with long brown hair in a ponytail and is missing her four front teeth. Close to 15,000 people descended on the Stonewall Jackson Resort over the weekend for the annual celebration of Hunting and Fishing days. The event is held every year just before the start of the fall hunting season and is sponsored by the WV Division of Natural Resources.
A small gas line explosion took place this afternoon on County Route 34, the Cassity Roadnear the intersection of the Adolph Road. The gas line which belonged to Energy Corporation of America, blew out parts of a ditch and the road. No one was injured. Crews from the Department of Highways and Energy Corp were on the scene for clean-up. The Coalton and the Huttonsville / Mill Creek Fire companies responded to the call.

A few changes were made by the Upshur county Commission in regards to the magisterial districts. Due to changes in the county and state populations, commissioners stated that the alterations had to be made. With the state’s recent redistricting, counties will be working to change to be sure it meets the population of the particular area. The Upshur County commission hopes to have the changes made by January of 2012.
Davis and Elkins College held founder’s days festivities and convocation ceremonies Thursday. The college held the celebration to recognize the contributions from the past all the way to the present. The institute was founded 107 years ago by US Senators Henry Gassaway Davis and Stephen B. Elkins.
West Virginia Wesleyan College announced its recent recipient of the Mike Ross Scholarship. Christopher Thomas of Terra Alta. The PrestonCountygraduate is a management major at Wesleyan.
Known as the first Lady of Bluegrass, Wilma Lee Cooper passed away at the age of 90. Wilma Lee teamed up with husband Stoney Cooper were known as one of Country Music’s top duos for three decades and were regulars on the Grand Ole’ Opry. Wilma Lee got her start singing bluegrass with her parents and also singing Gospel music with the Leary Family. Wilma Lee hailed from Valley Head. She was 90 years old.
State Police in Parsons arrested a man wanted in RandolphCounty. 32-year-old Brian Schoonover was taken into custody and charged with forgery and uttering. Schoonover is currently being held in the Tygartvalley Regional Jail on a $60,000 bond. The investigation is still ongoing.

State Police are investigating a break-in at the Backbone Mountain Wind power located near Route 90 and Route 219 near Thomas. According to authorities, someone had broken into one of the wind turbines between September 16 and the 19. Taken were several industrial tools and a Grainger Generator. Anyone who might have any information concerning the theft please contact the Parsons Detachment at 304-478-3101.
Two more arrests were made by Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies in connection with an ongoing drug investigation. 42-year-old John Franklin Arbogast and 38- year-old Richard Brown were charged with operating or attempting to operate a caldestine meth lab. Both men are currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $125,000 bond each. Arrested earlier this week was Christopher Arbogast and Richard Oldaker on similar charges.
Three men were taken into custody for the delivery of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school. Arrested were 23-year-old David M. Hull, 19-year- old Joseph B. Kelley, and 22-year-old Johnny L. Riley, Jr. The investigation was handled by the Upshur County Sheriff’s Department.
A Preston County School Bus side swiped an SUV on the Sugar Valley RoadWednesday afternoon. No injuries reported among the 32 students that were on board the bus. No citations were given. The Preston County Sheriff’s Department handled the investigation.
Students at Davisand ElkinsCollegewere taught how to set up emergency and rescue equipment in preparing for natural or man made disasters should they happen. Office of Emergency management director Marvin Hill spent time instructing students in the proper ways to assemble and disassemble emergency equipment. The students later signed a memo that they understand the proper procedures in preparing for emergencies.

The Upshur County Sheriff’s department along with the Buckhannon City Police arrested two men on drug related charges. Taken into custody were 19-year-old Christopher Arbogast of Wood Streetand 54-year-old Richard Oldaker of Upper Childers Run and charged with operating or attempting to operate a clandestine meth lab. Both men were arraigned and are currently being held in the TygartValleyregional Jail. Bond was set at $125,000 each. More arrests could be forth coming.
Early voting gets underway today in the special election for Governor. Voting will take place at area court houses or courthouse annexes today thru Saturday October 1st. The voting will take place Monday thru Friday. The Election is set for October 4th from 6:30amtill 7;30pm.

State Troopers took to the air in search of marijuana plants in BarbourCountyand struck Gold. Discovered were 80 marijuana plants with a street value of $100,000. Law enforcement is trying to put a halt to drug activities in and around North Central West Virginia. Should you spot any growth please contact your local State Police detachment.
The mayor and City Council of Weston are trying to clean up the town. Many complaints have been received concerning dilapidated houses in and around Weston. A meeting will be held this evening to address the problem and get feedback from the community concerning the issue and the possible use of grant money. The city will also discuss its new comprehensive plan.
The Division of Forestry reminds those that may want to burn during the daytime hours that a permit is required. The permits which otherwise prohibits burning between 7amand 5 pmis required through the fall season which runs October 1st through December 31st. The cost is $125 each and is issued through the local Division of Forestry Offices.
Unemployment figures came out today for the State of West Virginiawith most counties showing a jump in unemployment. Highest among area counties was Tucker from 9.9% to 10.6% followed by Pocahontas County 8.9 to 9.9%. Other area counties are as follows: Randolphfrom 8.6 to 9.6, Barbour from 8.5 to 9.4, Upshur from 7.5 to 8.4. Those showing slight increase were Pendleton 5.3 to 5.9 with LewisCountywas the lowest at 5.9 %.
A Weston man entered a plea of guilty on Monday in a U. S. Federal Court. Adam Edwards plead guilty to attempting to transfer obscene material to a minor in Bridgeportin November of 2010. Edwards is currently free on bond pending sentencing, faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

An Upshur county man was taken into custody early Sunday morning and charged with operating a meth lab. The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department says the 30-year-old Richard Brown had the chemicals and equipment to create a meth lab. Brown, who later confessed, was charged with attempting to operate a clandestine lab. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $75,000 bond.
Charges have been filed against the Barbour County Office of Emergency Management Director. According to the State Police Larry Allen supposedly executing a code red drill on September 2nd. Allen had entered the Philippielementary School in a mask and had fired a .22 caliber starter’s pistol. The Barbour Prosecutor’s Office has formally charged Allen with seven counts of assault.
Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies have charged a Buckhannon man with breaking and entering of a bank. 22-year-old Andy Nottingham attempted to break into a bank in the early morning hours on Saturday. Nottinghamwas identified by a witness. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $75,000.
Battle of the media All-Stars
Representatives of local media outlets The Inter-Mountain and WDNE radio are taking a break from the newspaper and airwaves on Sunday for a little friendly competition to see which team ends up in the mud during the Randolph County Fair.
In the "Battle of the Medias" a tug-of-war team for each outlet will be on opposite sides of a mud pit to find out which is the strongest. The pulling and tugging between WDNE and The Inter-Mountain begins at 3 p.m. at the mud bog arena.
The Inter-Mountain's tug-of-war team is comprised of Phil Waterman, circulation manager; Joe Blankenship, photographer; Sue Blankenship, classified sales; Ashley Binns, advertising account representative; and Brad Johnson, reporter. Other employees of The Inter-Mountain will be on hand to cheer on their co-workers.
WDNE's team will be Clark Martin, news director; Reid Thrush, program director; Brad Allen, IT engineering; Mel Smith, account representative and Debbie Thrush, account representative.

A Grand Jury was held in Upshur County on Tuesday and Wednesday. Of those indicted was Eddie Kendall Bennington of Buckhannon for burglary and conspiracy. Also indicted were Melissa and Gale Zickafoose of Lost Creek, for obtaining property under false pretense and Bobby Ray Johnson of Volga for the delivery of a controlled substance. The Grand Jury brought back a total of 31 indictments.
21-year-old Joshua Duff plead guilty in a Taylor County Courtroom Wednesday on sexual assault charges. In January Duff had allegedly taken a 15-year-old girl to RitchieCounty for the purposes of having sex. Duff could face up to 15 years in prison and will be required to register as a sex offender.
Unemployment around the state is on the rise. According to Workforce West Virginia, unemployment jumped to 8% in July. Around 4,900 more are unemployed around the state. County figures are to be released sometime today.
The Tucker County Commission accepted the resignation of Office Emergency Management Director Jonathan Hicks. Hicks accepted an administrative position with the Tucker County Board of Education. Commissioners will be discussing when to post the position at the next meeting.
A 30-year-old Elkins resident entered pleas of guilty on the distribution of marijuana in December of 2010. Billy George Leary, Jr. could face a maximum of five years in prison and fines of $250,000. Leary could faces an additional 20 years and fines of $1 million dollars on other drug related charges.
Close to 2,000 outages were reported in North Central West Virginia after a line of heavy thunderstorms tore through the area early this morning. Close to 2,000 customers were affected which included the communities of Bridgeport, Clarksburg, Jane Lew, Flemington and Weston. As of noon, close to a 1,000 customers power has been restored.

Construction will be getting underway in May for new facilities at Canaan Valley State Park. The park will be adding 160 new lodge rooms which will be attached to the main lodge at a cost of $24 million dollars. Funding for the project came from lottery funds. The project will start with the demolition of 100 rooms.
The Barbour County Senior Center has expanded its meal delivery program thanks to Wal-Mart. The Senior Center received a $20,000 matching grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation and the Meals on Wheels Association of America. According to Senior Center Director Brenda Wilmoth, this will allow the Center to reach areas they otherwise could not reach.
The State of West Virginia is ranked once again but, it’s not in what you think. A recent report from the U. S. Dept. of Transportation shows that the state ranks 7th in the nation for worst rural roads. The report went on to say that the state’s rural traffic fatality rate ranked at 14th. The WV Department of Highways is already receiving funds for paving the rural roads around the state.
A sewage leak was reported on Thurman Avenue in North Buckhannon along the creek near 2nd street Tuesday evening. The creek flows into the Buckhannon River and residents living downstream have been advised of possible contamination. There were reports of discoloration by no fish kill. The Upshur County Office of Emergency Services and the West Virginia Dept. of Environmental Protection were notified of the spill. Action was taken by the Buckhannon Sewer Department and the damaged pipe was replaced this morning.

A recall of ground turkey has hit West Virginia. The food company Cargill has issued a recall of 185,000 pounds of ground turkey due to salmonella found in the meat. The ground turkey meat was distributed nationwide under the Kroger, Fresh HEB, and Cargill’s Honeysuckle White Brands. This is the second recall within the last two months.
The Taylor County Circuit court was kept busy on Monday. Judge Alan D. Moats heard several cases one of which involved two individuals sentenced to the community corrections program. 20-year-old Ryn McGary was found to have a cell phone on his person with photographs of nude children on it. Another individual, Philip Poling was found to have tested positive for drugs. Both were taken to the Tygart Valley Regional Jail pending an investigation.
A local production company does well. The American Mountain Theatre of Elkins will be heading to the small screen. Officials announced that in January of 2012 shows at the Theatre will be appearing on RFD – TV. Shows will air three times a week with 26 shows to be produced within the year.
The New Page Corporation has filed for bankruptcy protection in both the U.S. and Canadian Courts. The firm claimed that it was hurt by higher prices for wood, pulp, and chemicals in its most recent quarter – as well as a slower demand for its product. New Page filed to guarantee payments to its employees and to keep its plants open. New Page has holdings in Dailey in Randolph County and a plant in Luke, Maryland. New Page is one of the largest manufacturers of coated paper.
One woman is injured as the result of a single vehicle accident early Tuesday morning. The Taylor County Sheriff’s Department was called out to the Knottsville Road near Grafton around 12:30am. A woman appeared to have lost control running the car into a ditch. She was air lifted to Ruby Memorial Hospital where her condition is unknown.

People around the Mountain State took time yesterday to pay tribute to those who lost their lives on 9/11. In Lewis County, the Junior Reserves of Lewis County High School presented a new American Flag for the flag pole in front of the County courthouse. The flag had been purchased by the area Daughters of the American Revolution. The ceremony followed a 21 gun salute by the Lewis County Honor Guard.
A freedom walk took place in Buckhannon to salute the men and women who died on 9/11. The walk took place though the streets of Buckhannon from the River Walk Trail to the Fire Hall where ceremonies were held.
In Randolph County first responders were honored on Saturday as officials from around the county teamed up with the Grandy Dancer to give meals to all emergency workers in the county. Over 250 people attended the event.
Eight West Virginia airports received more than $15 million dollars in Federal Funding, thanks to the efforts of Senators Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin and congressman Nick Rahall. The Barbour County Regional Airport will recieve over $233,000 and the Elkins Randolph County Airport just over $1,900,000. The Barbour Regional airport will use the funding for hanger facilities while the Elkins / Randolph County airport will use the funding to repair the airport’s runways.
Two former USP Hazelton inmates entered guilty pleas last week in Federal Court. 25 year old Jermaine Duplessis and 45 year old Eugene Wynn both plead guilty to one count each of a possession of a prohibited object, a cellular phone. Both will have three months added on to their current sentences.

Upshur County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man on drug charges. Taken into custody 23-year-old David Rae Heatherly of Buckhannon on felony possession of a controlled substance, Methamphetamine. He is currently being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on a $25,000 bond.
Mon Power and Potomac Edison file for recovery of fuel costs in West Virginia. Mon Power and Potomac Edison, subsidiaries of First Energy Corp. submitted a joint filing to the Public Service Commission of West Virginia to recover costs associated with fuel and purchased power. If the request is approved by the commission, the bill for a typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity will increase about $4 a month to $100 starting Jan.1, 2012. However, even with the proposed increase, rates for Mon Power and Potomac Edison residential customers are expected to remain 18 percent below the national average.

Mon Power will disrupt electric service in Northern Pocahontas County, this Friday, September 9th, from 8:30am to 11:30am. The stoppage is necessary to perform maintenance on the Frank station. The outage will affect the communities of Durbin, Frank, Bartow, Arborville and Thornwood. Mon Power went no to say they regret any inconvenience.
After several hours of searching in the Dolly Sods area, four missing hikers were found. According to State Police the hikers, all from Northern Virginia, were healthy and in good spirits. The Hikers had been reported missing since Monday.
Officials from around Upshur County got a look at the first phase of the new industrial park. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held yesterday to the 100 acres that will help service Upshur County. More then $3 million dollars was spent to prep the site. Officials are hoping the proximity to the Route 33 and I-79 will attract news businesses to their neck of the woods.

The search has ended for four lost hikers in the Dolly Sods area of Tucker County. West Virginia State Police and Canaan Valley Fire Department volunteers have located the hikers. The four from Virginia, started their hike on Friday and were reported missing at approximately 3:30 p.m.on Tuesday. Office of Emergency Management Director Jonathan Hicks said the hikers were in good shape and that the high waters may have caused their misdirection.
Philippi City Police responded to a bomb threat at the Middle School yesterday morning around 11:30am. A female student found a note pasted on the inside of a bathroom stall. State Police along with their K-9 unit were called into search the facility. No bomb was discovered. Authorities went on to say that they had a rash of similar threats during the last school year.
37-year-old Christina Kisamore pleads no contest in a Randolph Courtroom to one count of child neglect creating a risk of injury. Kisamore allegedly helped tie a child to a chair in a locked room, putting a sock in his mouth so that he could not yell. She was also accused of giving the child drugs. Her sentencing is set for October the 3rd.

A Buckhannon woman that had been reported missing for close to three weeks has been found. Crystal Douglas was found although police did not say where she was found. She is believed to be in good health.
A bench warrant was sworn out for a Huntingtonman who failed to appear before a Pocahontas County Judge. 26-year-old Harley F. Dickerson failed to appear for his arraignment last week before Judge Joseph Pomponio on drug related charges. Dickerson is wanted on charges of possession of a schedule II substance, possession of a schedule I controlled substance, and manufacturing and possession with intent to manufacture a controlled substance and possession of a firearm.

An Upshur County man was injured as the result of an ATV accident Saturday. The accident took place on the Centerville Road between Rock Cave and Princeton. The man lost control of his ATV, rolling it. He was air lifted to Ruby Memorial Hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries. His name was not available at the time of this report. The State Police is handling the investigation.
The Buckhannon City Police need your help in finding a missing woman. 24-year-old Crystal Douglas has not been seen in the last three weeks. Family members believe she may be in the Harrison County area. Douglas stands at 5’ 6 “ tall and 115 pounds with blond hair. Should you have any information on her whereabouts please call Upshur County 911 center at 472 – 9550.
Inspectors to the William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital in Weston were not pleased with their findings. The inspection which took place in early August, found conditions worse then they were upon their last inspection. One of the finds was the hospital was over it’s 150 patient capacity. Several recommendations were made which included fining the WV Department of Health and human Resources $1,000 each day the hospital is over it’s licensed capacity. The inspectors went on to say that fines will be levied with 45 days.
